“I won’t. I swear I won’t!” he screamed.
Silas reached out to pat him on the head. “Don’t be scared. By the time we’re done with you, you’ll beg us to let you die.” He rose to his feet and moved away. Matthew took his spot to squat down.
He reached out his hand, and a ball of fire appeared on his fingertips. Then the smell of burning flesh filled the air.
Matthew pulled his hand back. “Why did you want the clock?”
“I don’t know!”
Several more attempts were made to get the information they needed before they came to the conclusion that the man had no more information to give.
“Silas?”
Silas nodded toward the house. “Go inside, Fynn.”
Fynn didn’t argue.
When he heard the door close, Moses lowered his hand, and they all watched as the burned head disappeared completely under the ground.
Jody kept watching the movement of the ground until he was completely sure the man’s body was where it deserved to be.
In Hell.
Chapter Thirty-Nine
Sophie wearily sat down on the bed after returning from the hospital to see her parents. Her mother was going to be kept overnight because her blood pressure was dangerously high and needed to be monitored. Her father refused to leave her side, telling her to go home and get some rest, that she could come in the morning and give him a break.
“You look wiped out.”
The mattress sank next to her as Jody sat down.
Laying her head on his shoulder, she gave a shuddering sigh. “I am. I’ve never been so scared in my life.”
His arm came around her, holding her close. “Let’s take a shower and go to bed.”
She just wanted to crawl in bed and pull the covers over her. However, Jody didn’t give her the option, picking her up and carrying her to the bathroom.
“You bully.”
Jody chuckled and pulled her glasses off. “They’re crooked.”
“He messed them up when he slapped me.”
Jody ran his lips over her bruised cheek. “Does it feel better?”
It kind of did.
Sophie didn’t put up a struggle as he removed her clothes then his before tugging her into the shower.
The warm water soothed her tense muscles as Jody washed them off.
“Are you angry with me?”
“Why would I be angry?” he asked gently.
“I could tell you were hurt by what I said. All I could think was if I did something wrong, he was going to kill you.” Despite how warm the water was, she shivered. “I never believed in soul mates until I was afraid of losing you. I don’t think I could bear being without you.”
“You weren’t going to get rid of me that easily.”
