The man sank to his knees into the soil.

“How are you doing that? Stop it!”

Moses lowered his hands, lowering the man into the earth to his hips.

“Where are they?” Jody asked as the man struggled to pull himself out. “No?”

Moses clenched his hands into fists, taking his brother’s cue. Loosening his fingers, he sank the man to his neck. Exerting his strength onto the man’s throat, he unclenched his hands when Jody squatted down in front of him.

“Let me tell you what’s going to happen next. Tell me where they are, or I’m going to use your head as a fucking soccer ball.”

He started yelling the address out.

Jody rose to his feet as Silas called Greer to give him the address.

“Are they still alive?” Jody stared down at the man who was crying so hard snot was dribbling out of his nose.

“I think so.”

Jody restrained himself from asking Moses to completely bury him before he had the information he needed. “How many are there?”

“Four.”

“If you leave anyone out, you’re going to be spitting worms.”

Jody had no sympathy for him as they waited for Greer to call back. He looked up at the sky, seeing the blood star shining brightly.

Lowering his eyes, he kept his gaze on Silas’ blank expression. Silas was concentrating on what was taking place in town. The longer Silas went without talking, the tenser Jody became. Finally, two minutes before the time would have run out for Sophie’s parents, Silas spoke.

“Greer has them. Tate and Dustin are taking them to the hospital to have them checked out.”

Thank Mother he wasn’t going to have to tell Sophie her parents had been killed.

“Do we know who kidnapped them?”

“There were three men and one woman. Greer doesn’t know who the men are—he checked them out. The woman we all know. Chasity.”

When he got his hands on her, he was going to …

“Tate had to take her out. When Dustin entered the house, Chasity took a shot at him.”

“Are all the Porters okay?”

“Yes,” Silas answered.

“Was anyone else shot?”

Silas raised an eyebrow. “What do you think?”

“I don’t even know why I bothered to ask.” Sardonically, Jody shook his head.

“What are we going to do with him?” Isaac asked, placing his foot on the top of the man’s head sunk into the ground.

Silas moved to within his sight. “Why did you want the clock?”

“I don’t know. I was only told to get it! Let me go!”

Silas looked at him without sympathy. “I’m afraid we can’t. You could tell someone about us.”
