Perhaps I’d imagined it, but I swore there was a bit of sadness as he said those words to me.

No need, if I had anything to say about it. And I would. I had to. There was no way I was letting my mate go, even if that meant giving up everything I’d worked for. It was all worth nothing if I didn’t have Boen.

“Did you enjoy yourself?” I asked him later as we took the stairs to my little lair. The lair he shared with me.

“I did. Everything exceeded my expectations. It’s like living in a fantasy.”

“Is that right?” I chuckled. His glee was contagious. I could feel it soaking into me. My dragon wasn’t Mr. Cheerful all the time, but even he grinned from his place inside me. My omega was the sun, and my dragon had been in a shadow for far too long. “What else would be part of this fantasy of yours?”

As soon as the door closed to my apartment, Boen pushed me against the nearest wall and splayed his hands over my chest. “You.”

“Me?” I covered his hands with mine. “Tell me what you want with me, omega. Tell me all the ways I can make you happy.”

He gasped. “Kiss me.”

I bent down only slightly and captured his lips with mine. His head tilted as I reached behind him and pressed his body into mine. I licked at his bottom lip, begging for entrance, and he moaned and opened up to me. His taste was nothing like the best cookies or even the best brunch. He was the sweetest peaches and most delicious cake all wrapped up in one explosion.

He broke free and looked up at me with passion in his pale-green eyes. “Take me to bed, alpha. But not to sleep this time.”

I let out a growl. I’d wanted to hear those words from his sweet mouth since we walked through the doors of my business. “I want to. I need to, Boen, but there’s something I have to tell you first. I can’t…no, I won’t make love to you until… I have a secret. I’m afraid you might fear me for it, but I’m afraid keeping it from you would make you hate me even more.”

“You can tell me anything, Cyrus. Fear you? I don’t ever think I could fear you.”

“You might, and I’m terrified for you to look at me like that. Come outside with me. There’s something about myself that I have to show you.”

Most of the festivities had died down for the night. The stars were few in the sky and the moon in her full glory. I led Boen out by the hand, my lips still tingling from his kiss. My body still alight and craving his—more like starving for him.

“Stay there, okay?” I took a few steps from him and began to take off my clothes.

“Cyrus? Walk me through this, please. The unknown is scaring me. Not you, but I’m confused.”

My dragon wanted to soothe our mate and I did too. “I’m undressing to show you something, okay?”

Boen giggled nervously. “If this is you showing me your cock, we could’ve done that upstairs.”

I laughed along with him as I laid my clothing on a bench. “When I show you what I’m about to, please remember it’s me. We would never hurt you.”

“We?” My mate’s voice trembled. “We?”

“Please, omega. Please forgive me for not telling you before.”

I allowed my dragon to emerge. Human skin ripped, revealing dragon scales. Muscles pulled and pinched, shifting from human anatomy to the fiercer dragon structure. My gums slashed open with dragon teeth, and my fingers and toes turned to claws and talons.

My omega shrank until his back was against the nearest wall of the garden. His eyes were wide, and the tang of fear hung in the air. I knew he would be scared, but I had to reveal this truth to him. Our future depended on it.

Plus, he might be more than surprised when he realized he was carrying meggs.

Once the transformation was complete, I lowered my head to the ground and laid on my belly—something dragons didn’t do. It left us vulnerable.

My dragon’s senses felt total submission would be the way to ease our human.

“Cyrus?” His fists unfurled. “You’re…you’re a dragon? A dragon shifter?” He slowly approached as my dragon took him in through his eyes. He loved our human already. His scent was already deep in our veins. “Dragons are…you’re the dragon of my dreams.”

My beast huffed out puffs of smoke from his nostrils. Boen coughed and waved his hands in front of his face, waving away the smoke. “Mate,” he said with his gravelly voice.

“Mate? I’m your mate?” He didn’t scoff or run at the idea. “Yeah. I’m your mate, and you’re my dragon, aren’t you? Idreamed of you and drew you, trying to make you real for so long and here you are.” He walked up and looked me directly in the eye. Ran his soft hand over my scales as my chest burned hotter than it ever had before. Our mate was stroking us. He talked about me being his dream, but my dragon had longed for him all our life.

“Can you shift back? So I can see Cyrus? You are Cyrus, but I want to see your human side, please. You and I can play another time, right? Maybe you’ll fly me around?”
