“Nobody’s sick, bruh.”

“Then you need to tell me what’s up because you haven’t been on your A-game this year.”

I sighed and ran my hand down my face. “Remember Mona?”

“Mona? Winston’s wife?”

“Ex-wife, but yeah.”

“What about her?”

“I ran into her in New Orleans.”

Evander’s eyes widened. He’d been pacing while he spoke and sat in the chair in front of my desk.

“Is she the reason you extended your stay?” I nodded. “I guess I don’t have to ask what happened.”

“A lot of shit happened. I thought we connected, but her divorce had just been finalized, and she said she wasn’t ready for another relationship.”

“Hold up! Relationship? You?”

“Chill, man. I was open to exploring something more than fucking.”

“So, y’all… damn. That’s crazy as hell. Winston would lose his shit if he knew you hooked up with his wife.”

“Ex-wife.”

“It don’t matter. He’d still be pissed.”

“I couldn’t care less about that nigga. She’s a good woman and he did a number on her.”

“Yeah, she didn’t deserve him as a husband. So, what’s up with y’all? Does she still have you on ice?”

“I haven’t talked to her since I left her in her hotel room.”

“Have you tried?”

“Been texting her every day, and she hasn’t replied.”

“Damn.”

“I didn’t expect her to reply the first few weeks because she was clear about what she wanted, but it’s been three months.”

“You fell for her, didn’t you?” I didn’t respond. “You don’t have to say anything because your silence says it all. You caught the love bug.”

I shook my head. “Nah, it’s not like that.”

“Denial doesn’t make it any less true.”

“We only spent a few days together. Although it was uninterrupted, it wasn’t enough time to fall in love.”

“Nigga, all it takes is a few minutes when you’re meant to be.”

I didn’t respond for a minute as I pondered his words.

“It doesn’t matter how I feel. She—”

My ringing cell phone interrupted me. I looked at the screen and was shocked when I saw Mona’s name on the screen. Evander must’ve noticed my expression.
