“Who is it?”
“Mona.” He raised a brow. “I’ll hit you up later.”
“I guess that’s my cue to leave.”
I answered the call as Evander left my office. “Hello.”
“Hi, umm, is this Clinton?”
“Yeah, Mona. It’s me. How are you?”
“I’m… okay. How are you?”
“Better now that you’ve called. It’s been a minute.”
“Yes, it has. Umm, I’m sorry for not responding to your texts. I just—”
“You don’t have to explain. I wanted you to know I was thinking of you.”
“Every day?”
“Every single day, several times a day.”
“You still have a way with words.”
“I just speak my truth. To what do I owe the honor of this call?”
“Are you available to meet for breakfast tomorrow?”
“Sure. Text me the details, and I’ll be there.”
“Great. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
When I arrivedat the address Mona had given me, I was surprised to see an apartment building. I thought she might have transposed the numbers, so I texted her to clarify, and she replied with a code and an apartment number.
“Okay,” I said with a shrug after reading the text.
After parking my car, I approached the building, entering the code before going inside. I rode the elevator up to her floor and knocked when I found her unit. Seconds later, I heard movement on the other side before the door swung open.
Mona was a sight for sore eyes. The top half of her locs were in a bun on the top of her head, while the rest hung past her shoulders. Her face was makeup and blemish-free, and she was glowing.
She wore an oversized sweater that hung off her shoulders, nothing covering her legs, and fuzzy socks. My mind went straight to the gutter, and I wondered if she was wearing panties.
“Hey,” she greeted.
“Damn, you’re beautiful. C’mere.”
I didn’t wait for her to come to me. I stepped inside, letting the door slam behind me, cupped her face, and brought my lips to hers. I was relieved when she didn’t resist but instead opened her mouth to welcome my tongue. She took a handful of the front of my shirt and pulled me closer. We were out of breath when our lips finally parted.
My arms slid around her body, and hers moved to my waist. I had to admit being in her presence again felt good. Her calming spirit was what I’d been missing.
“Did you miss me?” she asked with a smile.
“You can’t tell?”
She giggled. “Maybe a little. Are you ready to eat?”
“Are you on the menu?” I slowly pulled the sweater up until the hem was above her waist.
