“We had a late meeting a few blocks away, so I thought I would surprise you.”
“Mission accomplished.” Olivia said with a smile as she looked over at Deja, who was looking straight ahead.
“Do you mind if we join you two for a drink?”
“I was just leaving,” Deja said as she stood.
“How are you getting home?” Stephen asked in a stern tone.
Deja rolled her eyes. “I’m taking an Uber. I…,”
“I wasn’t planning on staying. I will take you home.” Stephen's commanding voice took Deja by surprise. She turned and glared at him. “It’s late. Those shared ride companies aren’t always safe.”
Deja looked over at Olivia.
“He’s right Dee,” Olivia added.
Deja cut her eye at Olivia.
“You know what, we were going to share an Uber so there is safety in numbers,” Olivia said as she rubbed Deja’s arm.
This is stupid.
Deja thought. She was a grown ass woman, and she could take and Uber home alone. “No, Liv, stay and enjoy your evening,” she smiled at Caleb before turning to Stephen. “Thanks for the offer, but I’m capable of taking care of myself.” She grabbed her purse. “Enjoy yourselves, and I will text you when I get home Liv.” Deja brushed by Stephen and the smell of his cologne infiltrated her nose. She cleared her throat as she walked towards the door.
As she waited for her Uber, Stephen walked out and stood next to her. “Stop being so stubborn and let me take you home.”
“You may have control when we’re in the office, but after hours you don’t run shit,” she whispered in a stern tone. “Thank you, but no thanks.”
Stephen smirked as he walked towards a waiting black SUV. His driver opened the door for him. His eyes met hers as he got into the vehicle. A few minutes later, her Uber arrived and within twenty minutes, she was home. She got out of the car and walked to her door. Angry with herself for not already having her keys out. The entire ride home, she thought about Stephen and the way he kept looking at her. As she fumbled through her purse to get her keys, she noticed the Uber driver pull off.
That was rude.
“He didn’t even make sure I got in the house.” Deja mumbled to herself as she continued to fumble through her purse. She heard a vehicle come to a stop in front of her door. She spun around to see that same black SUV that Stephen got into. Deja finally had her keys in her hand when the window came down. Stephen glared at her. “This would have been easier if you had just let me take you home.”
“Are you following me?”
“I’m making sure you got home safely. Now please go inside and I will see you in the morning.”
Deja rolled her eyes and walked into her house and closed the door. She leaned against the door’s interior and let out a jagged breath. Before going to take a shower. She laid across her bed and texted Olivia.
I’m home, and guess who followed me?”
WTF! Why, that seems creepy.
Actually, it was sexy as hell. He wanted to make sure I got home safely.
Okay chicka, you got rich ass men following you home.
Stop, there is nothing there. Get back to Caleb. We’ll talk tomorrow.
Yeah, Imma go back to riding that dick again.
You are so nasty. Love you.
With each passing day, Deja continued to throw herself into her work, determined to prove her worth and rise above the petty gossip and clicks there were imbedded in the office. She had successfully navigated the treacherous landscape of office politics, but she couldn't shake the feeling that the most dangerous obstacle she would face lay hidden within the enigmatic man who controlled the office and was affecting her emotionally.
After being there for over a month, Deja walked through the lobby and stopped. She took a deep breath to calm her nerves as she took in the high ceilings and tasteful art adorning the walls. She noticed something new about the beautiful architecture of the building every time she walked in. A smile spread across her face. She did love her job. The open workspace buzzed with activity; conversations and phone calls filled the air as the intoxicating aroma of coffee wafted from the breakroom.
