Remy realized what he was doing as he shook his head. “Huh, going back to that question. Yes, I knew it would be a lucrative goldmine with the right book, but also, I thought it was interesting to be a part of something special. People love to read stories as an escape from reality. I have seen both of my moms do it, my sister, my grandmother, even you. A good book can change a person’s perception about certain situations or events; that’s why I wanted to purchase a publishing house because I wanted to be a part of that moment when a book does impact a person’s life.”
I glanced at Remy, realizing this was the Remy that I remembered and loved. He was being compassionate and real, which was why I fell in love with him over 10 years ago.
And possibly still do…
“See, I knew the first reason you gave was bullshit.”
“I do want to make money. I always want to make money.”
“I know you do, but I also knew there was more to the story than just making money.”
“I guess you really do still know me.”
I smiled as I looked back out at the window.
“Do you still think about us?”
I looked at Remy as he gave me an intense stare. I didn’t want to discuss this because I never stopped thinking about us.
“Why are you asking me this? Are you feeling nostalgic right now?”
“Because you have been.”
“Have you? It’s only right if you answer that question too.”
“I will, once you answer mine first.”
I sighed. I was not sure why he wanted to go down memory lane now. Although it would be nice for us to rekindle a romance together, I knew it would never happen. “I do, but what we had is over. We’ll never be able to rekindle that again.”
“I probably thought that too, but never say never about things.”
I nodded. “You’re right. Never say never.”
It looked like Remy wanted to kiss me as he gazed into my eyes. With the secret I was still harboring, I knew things could never happen between us, but just for a second, I wished things could. I wished I could go back in time and fix everything that had happened between us, which I regretted so much.
“We’re here, Porsha.”
I nodded as I was about to get out of the car, but Remy gently grabbed my arm.
“What were you thinking about a second ago?”
“Nothing.”
“Your eyes were saying otherwise. If it was what I was thinking, then we’ll have a long night.”
I glanced at him as he opened his door. I put a hand to my chest, wondering where all of this coming from. I knew we were heading into a civilized place with our conversation, but the excessive flirting was more than what I could imagine. I wanted to think about Remy in that way, how things used to be between us, him between my thighs, pleasuring me over and over again. Making love to him all day and night, but that was then. Now, I was just lucky if I could get through the night without exposing my secret.
He opened the passenger door and waited for me to get out. He watched me walk out of the vehicle, letting out a low whistle. “I have to admit, you are wearing that dress.”
“I know; you’ve been eying me since we left my place.”
“I can’t help it. You’re beautiful.”
“Thank you.”
“Well, let’s go be a couple, have some fun, and give Abuela the birthday she deserves.”
“Let’s do this.”
