He took my hand into his, and we walked into the venue. It was beautifully decorated in pink, white, and gold as the DJ was spinning reggaeton. As everyone was greeting Remy’s grandmother, I couldn’t help but to feel a bit sad. This could be her last birthday, so I would do my part to help her and her family remember it as a fun and festive night.

“Are you ready?” Remy asked.

I nodded as we went up to her, as she was greeting a couple ahead of us. She gave a sweet smile as she looked from me to Remy. From how she looked, she didn’t look as if she was sick, but I also knew looks could be deceiving. I had to put on brave faces for years, so I knew the feeling.

“Are my eyes deceiving me? Is it my grandson back together with his beautiful fiancée?”

I stared at her, wondering what she was talking about when Remy quickly intervened.

“Oh Abuela, you always being funny. But we’re back together.”

“Well, I can take what I can get. I’m happy that you two are together. You were miserable when Porsha left, so at least you’re smiling again.”

I turned to stare at the bar, hating what I had done to Remy.

“Oh sweetie, I know it was a difficult time then, but you two worked it out and are happy now. I can see it in your faces that you have moved past whatever happened.”

“We have, haven’t we, P?”

I looked at Remy, as he gave an enticing smile. “Yeah, we have.”

“Go have fun, you two. I still have other people to greet.”

Remy kissed her on the cheek as he took my hand to walk inside the event hall. I immediately saw Chandra, as she ran over to me for a hug.

“Y’all made it! How was grandma when y’all seen her?”

“She was fine for the most part,” Remy said.

“Expect for the part about me being your fiancée. We were never engaged,” I pointed out.

Chandra glanced at Remy, as he ran a hand through his hair. Did I miss something because I didn’t understand what was going on at this point?

“She probably had us mixed up with someone else. My cousin was engaged during the time we were dating.”

Chandra still looked crazy as she stared at Remy. I already knew then that Remy was lying, so I’d find out what happened once the party was over. Or maybe I shouldn’t since I had my own secret to keep.

“I’m going to go to the restroom. Care to join me, Chandra?”

“I don’t need to go.”

“You’re still coming with me,” I said as I grabbed her arm, and she went with me.

We were going near the corner when Chandra jerked away from me. “What the hell are you doing?”

“I need to know why your grandmother said to Remy that I was his fiancée.”

“That’s something you have to talk to Remy about. I’m not in this.”

“So, you do know something.”

“I don’t know anything.”

“You do know or you wouldn’t be giving me the runaround.”

Chandra sighed. “Let’s go to the restroom. There’s too many people walking around.”

I glanced around, seeing no one was in the hallway but I figured Chandra wanted privacy, so I followed her. We went into the restroom, as Chandra looked under the stalls to see if anyone was there. She noticed the coast was clear as she came over to me.
