“Because I was undecided.”
“So, you did know?” I asked while staring at Chandra.
“I seriously didn’t.” She stared at the two of us and put her hands on her hips. “I guess the awkwardness is over between the two of you.”
“No, it’s still there, but I have a business to conduct now,” Remy said.
“And what about Delgado Industries?”
“I will still run my initial company, but I also have employees who are capable of running it.”
“So, you’re going to be here more?” I implied.
“Yes, since I don’t know much about this business.”
“Then, why did you take ownership of it?” Chandra asked.
“That’s something I’ll discuss at another time. Now, I need to figure out who’s this new author that’s already making a buzz with their new book?”
I sighed as I turned my monitor around to show Remy the cover of the book I was about to edit. He glanced at it and then at me.
“She’s an up-and-coming author who has made a name for herself on indie book sites. Oxford acquired her new book, but the publishing was delayed due to your acquisition,” I said while giving him the death stare.
“Well, lucky for her. If I didn’t step in, she wouldn’t have a book to publish,” Remy mentioned. He stared at me, taking in every inch of my body, which overwhelmed me.
I could tell Chandra was a little uncomfortable as she picked up her purse. “I think I’m going to head out. I have to get back to work anyway.”
“Okay, but we’ll meet up later?”
“Of course,” Chandra said. She went to the door, nudging her brother on the way before leaving.
Remy chuckled as he stared back at me. “She really didn’t know about here.”
“Then, what’s your motive for purchasing this place? Is it because of me?”
“Wow, and people thought I was cocky.”
“It’s kind of a coincidence that you’re the new owner just as soon as I get a job here.”
“This has nothing to do with you. My accountant told me the company was up for sale, and I decided to take a chance on it. I figured this could be a good money maker since people love to read; so, if you want to continue thinking this is about you, then think again.”
I stared at Remy, seeing the stony glaze he was giving me.
“The fact that you could open your mouth and say this is about you is completely selfish. You the one who walked out of our relationship and never even explained why you did it. We haven’t seen each other in 10 years and not once have you even apologized to me. I should still be mad at my sister for keeping the charade going about you, but I forgave her long ago since she’s family. Hell, I should fire your ass.”
“Remy…”
“Don’t worry, I’m not. I’m going to give you a chance to live out your dream. At least I’m doing that for you because you damn sure didn’t do it for us and our relationship.”
“Remy…”
He turned his back on me and went to the door. He slammed it, causing me to jump. I looked back at the computer screen, knowing I deserved that. I knew this was going to be hard being around him, but I had to prove myself with this position, not just for him but for myself.
