“You must be the new editor?” the person beside me asked.
“Yes, I am.”
“And he wants to see you?”
“I guess so.”
“I don’t think that’s a good thing.”
“Possibly not,” I mumbled as I got up.
What turned out to be the most exciting day of my life was now the absolute worst. I had a feeling once this conversation was over, my first day would also be my last.

hen my business accountant, Desi, mentioned about acquiring a new business venture, I didn’t think he was talking about a publishing company. Hell, I didn’t know anything about the publishing industry. I was a tech guy, so romance books weren’t my forte. But after speaking with Cory Lee, the person who wanted to sell, he wanted nothing to do with the company anymore and wanted to sell it to the highest bidder, I figured why not. Although I had conversations with the former owner, Henry, he had no say in the matter since he sold it to Cory, so he was immediately out of the company. I was always up for a challenge, so this was new for me. Not only that but, from what I’d read on publishing houses, they could make lucrative money when the right book came along, so I’d give it a shot.
I was going to pull out of the deal only because of Henry's small debt over the company, but something made me change my mind. I started looking over other areas, including the staff, and a new development took place, making me reconsider the offer. Although Porsha was new, her name was on the staff’s roster, which gave me an idea. Yes, she broke my heart and made me not want to think about love ever again, but I figured I could make her life just as miserable as she made mine. She’d probably want to quit once I was done with her.
I stood in front of my desk, waiting for Porsha to arrive. I looked at my watch, wondering what was taking her so long. The meeting ended 10 minutes ago. Unless she couldn’t find the office, I had a feeling she could be avoiding me.
The door slowly opened, revealing Porsha. She looked scared out of her mind as she stood by the door.
“You can come in.”
I looked at her, as she closed the door behind her. She still looked as breathtaking as ever. Her honey colored skin was glowing as her hair was back to its wild, curly ways as it framed her face. Her brown eyes were gazing at me as she continued to stand by the door. I guess she wasn’t going to move from that spot.
“I guess a sight for sore eyes, huh?”
“I didn’t think I would see you again.”
“I don’t know why you would think that, considering you’re still friends with my sister. The two of you didn’t think I wouldn’t find out you were still talking?”
“I guess we weren’t discreet enough.”
“You had her lying for you, but you’re good at that, aren’t you? Using people to get what you want.”
“Are you really going to do this right now?”
“It’s been 10 years too long so, yeah, I am.”
“Why are you here?”
“Are you being serious right now, considering I’m the one who should be pissed at you.”
“I know you should be.”
“But you’re the one who wants to give me an attitude. You have no fucking room for that.”
Porsha took a deep breath, as I threw daggers at her. The nerve of her!
I could tell she was carefully choosing what to say to me, as she took another breath before speaking. “From what I know about you, you don’t know anything about publishing.”
“How would you know? We haven’t talked since the night you disappeared from me.”
