With a rare moment in a room without wolves prying and skulking, I stand alone with my eyes closed, drawing in a deep breath. There’s none of the strange sensation I had out in the halls. Nothing to indicate there’s anything going on out of the ordinary.
This place is weird, no doubt about it, and so far, I haven’t been able to get beneath the initial impression ofcrazy town.
“I can see why the locals are terrified of this place,” I mutter under my breath.
The Redcliff Pack is thus named because of their reputation and the way they paint the mountains red with blood. That was under the old Alpha. Reid does things differently, but the name has stuck.
“Trying to pick out a nice bedtime story for yourself?”
The familiar voice greets me, and I straighten first my spine and then my shoulders. “I sure am. Do you have one you’d like to recommend, Julius?”
I turn to see him standing in the room with the door closed behind him, staring at me. He got the slip on me.
How had he managed to get in the room without me knowing? I’m not that distracted.
“You have no business being here,” he tells me.
“Well, you’re going to have to take that up with Reid, because he’s given me free range of your house.” I trail a finger along the closest row of books, touching their spines and shooting him a pointed look.Try me.
Whatever he wants, and he clearly wants something, he isn’t in any hurry to get around to it. And there’s nothing I hate worse than a conversation that drags on because someone won’t get to the point.
“Are you trying to tell me the library is off limits? Your personal domain?” I ask.
“You know exactly what I mean.” Julius takes a step closer without breaking eye contact, like he’s some kind of movie villain. I’m not buying it.
I lift a brow. “Do I?”
“You might have everyone else fooled with your little pious act. The punishment you allowed Reid to dole out. He doesn’t tell me things, but I know what I know.”
“Which seems like sorry little, considering your head is so full of thoughts of yourself,” I toss back.
“You think so, do you? Or maybe, like you, I’m just hiding. Waiting.”
“Waiting for what?”
“Waiting for the end, of course.”
I’m not sure if it’s a threat or not because with Julius, it’s almost impossible to tell.
“You’re going to have to clarify things for me.” I point to the side of my head before saying, “As you can see, I’m a little slow. Nowhere near able to keep up with your high level of intelligence. Are you telling me you’re waiting for the end of your brother’s reign or the apocalypse? Because I know your room is filthy, but I never took you for a doomsday prepper.”
His brows draw low in a scowl. “Tasha, cut the bullshit.”
“I didn’t realize we were knee-deep.”
“What do you really want? Because I find it impossible to believe you’re really a sacrifice, and even less possible that you’re allowing my brother to use you as his toy in bed. Although I can only imagine what surprises wait between those legs of yours.”
“Teeth,” I answer simply. “Acid that burns and shrivels up any dick into a raisin.”
“Joke if you want.”
“Idowant.” I let out a laugh and receive a hot smile in return.
“But I’m going to get to the bottom of whatever it is you’re doing here,” he finishes.
“Whatever is going to help you sleep at night. Now how about helping me pick out a book?”
“You…” He chuckles. His gaze is nothing short of deeply suspicious. “I’ve got to hand it to you. You’re amusing.”
