Alpha Lightfeather whispers something in Crown’s ear, then sits him on the ground. The fawn looks at Nyah before hobbling back to the barn with four Pack members following him.
With his large brawny physique, Alpha Lightfeather unhurriedly ambles to my father’s side.
“There are no guards at the entrance because any fool who comes on this land with ill intent will never leave it,” Alpha Lightfeather tells her.
Megan scoffs at his words. “I’m not worried about that because with the snap of my fingers, I can have those men destroy this entire Pack, every man, woman, and child. Too bad they didn’t get here in time to save Ramona. Oh, well she’s just a casualty of war.” Megan looks at the men who arrived, then says to me, “You can still change the fate of this Pack by leaving here with me. I have the soldiers of Fenrir.” Her eyes sweep the people standing around. “Honestly, at some point you have to acknowledge there is no fight left.”
Ready to fight until my last breath, I counter, “Are you sure about that?”
Just then the young women Elder Nelah sent off, came running back. One of them gives the Elder a brown Croaker sack with the other pack members moving back. Elder Nelah chants words I have never heard before; probably an ancient language used long ago. I glance at my father and Alpha Lightfeather who have their heads bowed, showing respect. I guess from understanding the cryptic language that is foreign to me.
Elder Nelah starts pouring the mixture that looks like ashes and dirt on the ground, forming a circle around Nyah and Megan. Once the bag is empty, she says, “Only one of you will leave this sacred circle. If either tries to leave before that, you forfeit your life to the Pack.”
Megan grins wide at Nyah, cracking her neck. “I’m never one to run away from a fight. If I didn’t have to stick to the plan the first night I met you at that dinner, I wouldn’t have hesitated killing your ass, but now I have another chance to do it in front of yourmate.”
Nyah’s joints crack as she rolls her shoulders. “You can try, but things aren’t going to end the way you think they are.”
“And why is that?” Megan questions with a smug look.
My mate squares her shoulders, coming into a fighting stance. “Because you think I’m this lowly peasant shifter mated to Braxton, but you are about to learn first-handed things aren’t always as they seem.” Megan’s grin slowly falls as Nyah does the Bruce Lee ‘bring it’ motion with her right hand and says, “Let’s dance.”
Chapter 33
Nyah
Megan screams like a banshee as she rushes towards me with her arms extended and her manicured nails replaced with claws. Big mistake on her part because she attacked off of emotions, not strategy. I hold my ground until the last moment, then step to the side. Just as she’s parallel to me, I elbow her to the side of the head, causing her to stumble to the side, almost coming within inches of the circle.
“That’s right, little sis. Show that heifer you not a punk,” Kenia yells, but I let it go in one ear and out the other. The fight has just begun and knowing that Megan is a descendant of Fenrir, I’m sure she probably has some tricks up her sleeve.
“Lucky shot. Anyone can get a one off before they are humbled,” Megan tries to play off as she rubs the side of her head. “But it won’t happen again.”
“If that’s what you think,” I return, not letting her get into my head, but I will do my best to get in hers. “But I’m sure it will.”
Megan snickers, asking, “And why are you so confident about that?”
“Because you’re all talk and no-show,” I pause, then say, “I lost my momma at an early age, but my little mind held onto something she used to tell me.”
“And what the Hell was that?” Megan asks when she should be getting ready for the ass whooping I’m about to serve her.
I grin, showing my pearly whites just before her canines break through. “She said never let another take what yours is. Whether it’s your mate, your family, or your life. And you have tried me one too many times.”
Megan stares at me, then laughs, “Fuck you and yourmomma. If the only thing she taught you were a few meaningless words, it’s probably good she’s dead.”
“This bitch,” Kenia growls as she tries to enter the circle, but Levi pulls her back.
She struggles in his arms. “Let me fucking go, Levi,” Kenia roars with her voice mixed with her wolfs.
“No,” he argues, doing everything in his power to hold her back. “This is Nyah’s fight. You cannot intervene.”
I see the tears in my sister’s eyes from Megan’s hurtful words and I know she wants to join me, but the circle has been made and she can’t cross it no matter what Megan says.
As I give Kenia a settling look, it’s enough for Megan to take advantage. She slashes her claws across my chest before sweeping my feet from underneath me. I cry out from the pain as my body hits the ground hard, knocking the wind out of me.
“Nyah,” Braxton cries out as Megan drops down, straddling my torso and pinning my arms.
The last person I see before Megan starts her assault is my daddy with his eyes closed and his lips moving rapidly.
Blood fills my mouth and oozes out when she connects with a right hook followed by several more. Megan then claws the side of my face down to my neck, breaking the skin. “We’ll see how much Braxton will love your pretty face once I’m through with it,” she sneers, attacking the other side.
