Chapter 15
Hailey
After the long weekendwe just had with Nina’s grand re-opening, and Sunday dinner with the entire family and friends, I am so happy I thought ahead and did not schedule any appointments this Monday. With Devyn at school, and Alistair at work in the city, I can just kick back and have some me time.
Althaia, Father, Grandfather, and Sabre, left a few hours after dinner last night to fly back to Chicago. We really hated to see them go, but I’m sure they will be back soon once Nina starts planning for her and Zar’s wedding. Althaia and GeeGee are tickled pink to be helping her with the arrangements. Nina has asked Janae to be her Matron of Honor, and Sabre and I to be her Bridesmaids. I was honored by her request, and Devyn was extremely excited that she was asked to be her Junior Bridesmaid. Zar, of course, asked Alistair to be his Best Man, and Xander and Mike to be his Groomsmen.
GeeGee wondered how us walking down the aisle with someone else’s other half would work. Nina simply replied, it’s her wedding, and nothing about it will be traditional, so we will be walking out with our men.
I’ve spent most of the morning cleaning and doing laundry. Alistair fusses about it, saying I could rehire the maid service he had before we moved in. But, as I tell him every time, I am a Southern woman who likes to do my own cleaning, and I don’t need anyone else touching my underwear.
Now that I have the last load in the dryer, I’m about to make myself a quick salad for lunch and catch up on some of my shows.
Humming as I walked the small hallway to the kitchen, I paused as my cell phone started to ring. Pulling it from my back pocket, I instantly smile as I see my husband’s name appear on the screen.
“Hello,” I purr, answering.
“Hailey baby, I need you to get the file I had Tech do on you and Devyn, and bring it to the school,” he rushes out.
“What? Why? What’s going on, Alistair,” I panic. “What’s wrong with Devyn?”
“Η καρδι? μου (my heart), I don’t know all the details, but I decided to leave work early to spend some time with you. On my way home, the school called saying a lady is there claiming to be her mother, and she is trying to check Devyn out early. They called me because they know I am usually the only person who picks her up unless you or GeeGee does it. Baby, look, just get the file, and go pick GeeGee up. The principal said Devyn is pretty shaken up by it. I don’t know what the fuck is going on, but I smell some bullshit,” he snarls on the line.
Oh, my God! No, please no, I think to myself.
“Hailey,” Alistair shouts into the phone.
“I’m...I’m on my way,” I stammer.
“Don’t forget to get GeeGee. I’ll see you in a few, and Η καρδι? μου, try not to get too upset. We’ll get to the bottom of this.”
I nod my head up and down. “Okay,” I responded as I shoved the phone back into my pocket, not even waiting to see if he ended the call.
Alistair must have called GeeGee after he hung up with me, because she was waiting outside when I pulled up in front of Zar and Nina’s house. After she jumped in, I wasted no time getting to the school.
Pulling up to the school, I park in front of the main entrance, ignoring the guard who says I need to move my car. He blocks our path, holding up his hands.
“Excuse me ma’am, but you can’t park there. That’s the bus zone,” he states.
GeeGee stops, then asks, “Are the kids getting out soon?”
“No ma’am, but...” he starts.
She holds up her hand. “Are the buses coming soon?”
“No ma’am, but it clearly says,” he points to the signs indicating ‘Bus Zone, No Parking’.
GeeGee stops him again. “Well, if the buses aren’t coming and the kids aren’t getting out soon, then we’re parking here. We have urgent business inside, and if we come back out here, and that car is towed away, you and I are going to have a problem. Do I make myself clear?”
She gives him a challenging look, that has the man stepping to the side to let us pass.
“Thank you” GeeGee leans in closer to read his name badge. “Thank you, Paul. This shouldn’t take too long.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Paul obediently says.
GeeGee grabs my wrist, steering me to the stairs. Just as we clear the last one, the door is opened by Alistair. GeeGee releases me, as I rush into his arms.
“Alistair, where’s Devyn,” I question.
