Chapter 4

Hailey

We rejoined the familyto let them know we would be leaving. Devyn was excited to be getting a chance to see the city of Chicago up close and personal. I was excited too, because I had friends back in Atlanta who would visit their families here and would come back raving about a deep dish pizza restaurant called Giordano’s, and a fried chicken place called Harold’s. I couldn’t wait to try them both.

Alistair took us through the kitchen and into the four car garage. Inside was a black Mercedes C Class, an SUV, a maroon Chevy Tahoe, and a black and chrome Ducati Vyrus motorcycle.

“Wow, who’s cool motorcycle is this,” Devyn admired, going over to touch the handlebars.

“It’s mine,” Alistair answered. “I like to ride it to the city when I come home to visit, if the weather permits.”

“Will you take me for a ride on it?” she asked, rubbing the leather seat.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Devyn,” I said, pulling her away from the bike.

“But Hailey...” she started.

Alistair laughed, then told her, “We’ll talk about it later. Let’s head out.”

She said nothing else as she followed him to the C Class. Alistair opened the back passenger door for her. After she slid in, he opened the front one, then turned to see me still standing in the same spot. I shook my head as I went over to him. I’m going to have to watch these two, or else I’ll find myself being double teamed in the future.

I don’t know who had the most fun, me or Devyn. Alistair first took us by Navy Pier. At first we were sad to learn that it was closed due to the pandemic, but it was still nice to get out and walk around to see the sights. Alistair promised to bring us back after it reopened so we could ride the Ferris wheel.

Next, he took us to Shedd Aquarium. It was amazing to see all the different types of fish. Alistair bought Devyn a large stuffed clown fish because of her fascination over them. God, I can’t tell you how many times she had me watch Finding Nemo with her when she was little. After buying us numerous souvenirs, Alistair earned a big hug from Devyn when he told her he would buy her a fish tank to go in her room at his house. I was kind of taken aback by it. With everything going on, I hadn’t really thought about Devyn and I moving in with him. When Devyn went to look at the sharks, I pulled Alistair to the side.

“Hey, ummm, since we’re doing this whole getting to know each other thing, don’t you think it might be wise for Devyn and me to get our own place for the time being?”

I wasn’t sure how to read his expression. It was something mixed with pissed and irritated. As I gave him the same energy back, he quickly put a smile on his face.

“Getting your own place is totally out of the question. We’re married and will be living as a married couple under one roof,” he smoothly said in a matter of fact tone. “Devyn will have her fish tank in her room and that’s that.” Before I could respond back to him, he left me standing there with my mouth hanging open, as he pulled out his phone and made a call.

I remained quiet as we left the Aquarium for our next destination, wherever that was. I played a game on my phone as Devyn tried to guess where we were going. I looked up when I felt the car begin to slow down. I stared at the sign, then at Alistair, then back at the sign on the store front, Rothstein and Sons Jewelry. I was so into the game, I wasn’t even paying attention to the ritzy shopping district we entered.

“What are we doing here?” I asked Alistair as he parked the car.

He glanced over at me as he took his seatbelt off. “I need to pick up a few things, and I want you and Devyn’s opinions.”

“Cool, I love jewelry,” Devyn sang with the sound of her seat belt coming off, then the door opening.

Alistair said nothing else as he got out and came to open my door. I looked up at him as he smiled at me. Sighing, I undid my seatbelt, and took his hand. Devyn took my other hand, as Alistair closed the door. Together we strolled to the store where a sales agent waited for us with the door open.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Kourakos. It’s good to see you again. This must be your lovely wife and sister,” the agent greeted. I wondered how he knew who Devyn and I were?

“Hello, William. Nice to see you too. Yes, this is my beautiful wife, Hailey and our little sister, Devyn. I trust you have the items I requested,” Alistair responded, shaking William’s hand.

William happily smiled, saying, “Of course, sir. Right this way.”

Alistair let go of my hand and motioned for us to follow William. We followed him through the elegant store as all types of jewelry sparkled at us. Alistair laughed as Devyn and I oohed and ahhed in front of him. William finally brought us to a private area with a table and four chairs. After we were seated, he went behind the counter and into an adjoining room. Moments later, he returned holding a tray full of diamond rings. My head whipped towards Alistair, whose eyes followed William as he placed the tray on the table and sat across from us.

“As you requested Mr. Kourakos, I have personally selected our finest rings in the store. What do you think about this one?” William asked, smiling as he held up a gold ring with a large diamond on the top and two smaller ones on the sides.

“Too gaudy,” Alistair dryly replied, causing William’s smile to waver.

William cleared his throat, then said, “Well, this is only the first one, you have plenty more to choose from.” He sat the ring back in its place, and went for another, but Alistair stopped him.

“That one,” Alistair spoke, pointing to an exquisite diamond ring. “Tell me about that one.”

Evidently, it must have been really expensive because the smile that spread across William’s face spoke volumes.
