The rest of the ride was uneventful, until I pulled up in front of Zar’s house. He has already chewed my ass out. Next was Father and Grandfather. There was no way around it. As I put the SUV in park, Zar got out, and headed to the door. Inhaling deeply, I shut off the engine. Zar glanced over his shoulder at me before disappearing into the house. I’m going in, but first I needed to call Hailey.
Grabbing my cell phone from the console, I pressed one in my speed dial, which now belonged to Hailey.
After four rings, a sleepy sounding Hailey answered.
“Hello,” she whispers. Even with her tired voice, she sounded so sexy. The thought of her sleeping in my old room, in my bed, caused me to smile.
“Hey, Hailey. It’s me,” I greet.
“Alistair? Why are you calling so late? Is something wrong? Are you okay?” Hailey frets. Awww, she's worried about me.
“I’m fine, Hailey. How is Devyn? Are you two enjoying your stay at my parent’s home?” I ask, softening her up before I drop the bomb on her.
“Your mother and GeeGee are wonderful. Devyn adores them and they are spoiling her rotten. She hasn’t had this much attention in like forever. I know I didn’t want us to come, but I’m glad we did. Devyn’s been through enough and I think she needs this right now, even if for a small amount of time.” She yawns through the phone. “Excuse me.”
I smile. “You’re excused, but it won’t be but for a small amount of time, Hailey. While I’m glad the two of you are enjoying yourselves, I have something to tell you.”
Seconds pass before Hailey whispers, “He’s found us hasn’t he?”
I tighten my grip on the phone as I hear the fear in her voice. Maybe I should’ve killed his ass instead of giving him a warning.
“Yeah, he’s here but he doesn’t know where you guys are. He followed your debit card purchases here to Dallas. I’ve met with him...”
“You what!?” Hailey shrieked into the phone. Her outburst must have woken Devyn. Hailey tells her, “Shhhh, it’s okay, Devyn. Go back to sleep. Hold on a second, Alistair.” I can barely hear the sound of her movements, but I wait for her. A door closes. She must’ve gone into the attached bathroom.
“What do you mean you met with him, Alistair? Why would you do that? Oh my God, you have made it worse for us. We can’t stay here! If he’s tracked us to Dallas, then he can damn sure find us here too. I knew we should’ve kept running, but no, you brought us here and now that asshole is going to...,” she seethes.
“Hailey,” I say in an authoritative tone, quieting her. “Enough! You and Devyn aren’t going anywhere. You’re in the safest place you can be right now. As I’ve told you before, there’s no more running. That motherfucker can’t get to you or Devyn, even if he tries. Now, as I was saying, I met with him and told him he needed to return to Atlanta, because there is nothing here for him.”
Hailey huffs, “And you think he’s going to listen to you, Alistair?”
“If he values his life, he will,” I chuckle lowly.
“You are crazy,” Hailey murmurs.
I laugh. “So, I’ve been told. Look Hailey, I knew you were going to be upset when I told you all of this, but I didn’t want to hide anything from you. Just try to stay calm and I’ll take care of everything on this end, okay?”
Hailey sighs, then answers, “Yeah, okay.”
“Alright then, and no more running, right?” I ask. When she doesn’t respond, I call her name again. “Hailey”
“Fine, no more running.”
“Good, now go back to bed and I will call you tomorrow. Goodnight, Mrs. Kourakos.” I smile wide knowing she’ll get irritated at being called that, but that’s who she is now.
“Goodnight, Alistair,” Hailey hisses out before ending the call.
Before I got out to go into Zar’s house, I made one more call. After being cursed out for calling so late, I told GeeGee what happened, and to keep an eye on Hailey. She said she wouldn’t run, but I needed to make sure didn’t.
