Chapter 2

Hailey Kourakos

Since hanging up thephone with Alistair, my mind has been in a tailspin. We need to get out of here. His mother, Althaia, GeeGee, Nina, and Janae have shown us nothing but kindness. I can’t have the shit with Andre affect them in any kind of way. Plus, with my background in Psychology, there’s no telling what the Psychopath known as Alistair Kourakos will do next.

After hanging up with Alistair, I left the bathroom, and changed into a sweatshirt, jeans, and sneakers. Next, I went into the closet and grabbed our bags, throwing as much of the clothing and toiletries he brought for us in them. I went over to Devyn, who was peacefully sleeping and shook her.

“Devyn? Devyn, you need to get up.”

She begins to stir, rolling onto her back. “But Hailey, I’m sleepy,” she whines, not opening her eyes

“I know you are but we have to go,” I tell her.

Devyn’s eyes fly open. “Go? Where are we going? Is Alistair coming to get us?”

I shake my head from side to side. “No, he’s not coming. Just get up and get dressed, okay?’

“I’m not going unless Alistair is with us,” she proclaims, sitting up, crossing her arms over her chest.

An exasperated sigh leaves me. “Devyn, I don’t have time to argue with you. Now, get up and do as I told you.”

“No,” she defiantly responds.

“Fine,” I say with frustration, before going over to the dresser that held some of our clothes, throwing them into the bags.

When I finish, Devyn’s was still sitting in the same spot, pouting, as I toss her a pair of jeans.

“Devyn, put those on,” I order.

“No, let me call Alistair first,” the little brat fusses.

“You’re not calling him, so get up! We don’t have much time and I don’t have time for you to revert into your terrible twos. Get up,” I sternly state.

Devyn rolls her eyes as she throws off her covers. She took her time putting on the jeans, then slid on the gym shoes I left out for her, before meeting me at the door.

“Try to be as quiet as possible. I don’t want to wake anyone up,” I say in a hushed voice. Devyn doesn’t acknowledge what I’ve said, but that’s fine with me as long as she does as I say.

Grabbing the door handle, I slowly twist and pull. I damn near jump out of my skin when I see GeeGee and Althaia standing on the other side of the door.

“Going somewhere?” GeeGee asks, smiling at me. “Now, you know that boy was going to call me after he talked to you. Alistair had a feeling you might make a run for it.” She turns to Althaia and says, “I guess it’s a good thing we decided to come and check on them when we did.”

Althaia nods before asking me, “Hailey dear, why are you trying to leave, and take this child out at this time of night?”

Devyn, with her turncoat self, decides to answer before I can. “I didn’t want to leave Althaia! I wanted to call Alistair, but Hailey wouldn’t let me.”

Althaia pulls Devyn into her arms. “Don’t worry, dear. We’ll get all of this settled. Hailey, let’s step back in the room.”

I try to protest. “I’m sorry Althaia, but Devyn and I really need to go. I can’t have our troubles forced onto you and your family.”

Althaia gives me a kind smile as she states, “Oh love, you fail to realize that you and Devyn are our family now. Your troubles are ours. Now, let’s go in the room so you and I can have a talk. There are some things I need to set straight with you.”

As she continues to smile at me, I glance over to GeeGee, who nods her head up and down, smiling as well. Sighing, I take a step back into the room to let them enter.

“Hailey, can I call Alistair now,” Devyn requests. I narrowed my eyes at her.

GeeGee places her hand on my arm. “Let her call him.”

Dropping the bags by my feet, I pull the cell phone from my pocket, dial Alistair’s number, and put it on speaker. When it starts ringing, I hand the phone to Devyn. She grins as Alistair answers.
