I snap. “Why so you can keep me here long enough for whoever you were on the phone with to show up. I don’t fuckin’ think so!”
“Nina baby, what’s going on,” Zar asks searching my eyes.
“Mymotherjust tried to sell me off for drugs and money. She was on the phone telling someone I was here. Apparently, this person told her to call if I showed up,” I tell him. Then it hits me. I whip my head towards my momma. “Trent! Trent got a hold of you!” This time, I do try to put my hands on her, but Zar holds me back.
“You fuckin’, bitch,” I yell, struggling to get to her. “After everything I’ve done for you and this is how you repay me?! I’m done with you! You hear me! I’m done with you!”
Momma tries to charge at me, but Zar pulls his gun out on her, stopping her in her tracks. She holds up her hands like he’s the damn police.
“Don’t fuckin’ move,” he orders. He starts to back us to the door.
Momma points her finger at me. “You want to talk about all the shit you’ve done for me?! You owe me that and then some! I’m the one who had you, took care of you! Me! You fucking owe me! If it wasn’t for me kicking you out of the house to toughen you up, you wouldn’t have none of the shit you have now! You should be on your fucking knees, thanking me!”
I look at her with pity. Despite the drugs, men running in and out of the house, her putting me out...I still loved my momma, hoping and wishing one day she would be better. But no more!
“I’m done and if you’re smart, you’ll get the hell out of this house before Trent gets here and finds out I’m gone. He’s gonna kill you,” I whisper. Those will be the final words I will ever say to my momma. As far as I’m concerned whether Trent gets to her or not, she was dead to me now.
Momma’s eyes grow big before she laughs, barking, “Be done then, but I guarantee you’ll need me before I need you.”
“Not if I can help it,” Zar states as we leave out the door. He re-holsters his gun then disables the alarm on the car. Opening my door, he helps me in before going to the driver’s side and gets in himself. Zar starts the car, throwing it into drive. The wheels of the tires spin, burning rubber as he floors the gas pedal, getting us as far away from my momma’s house as possible.
Zar held my hand the entire ride back to the house, giving me words of encouragement as I silently cried. Janae called my new cell phone twice and when I didn’t answer, she had Mike call Zar’s. Mike had his phone on speaker as Zar gave them the short version of what my momma did. Janae started yelling and cursing until she ended the call saying they were coming to the house.
I notice Mike’s truck when we drive up to the house. Mike must have called Alistair and Xander because their vehicles are here, too.
“Baby, everything is going to be alright. Forget all of that bullshit your mother said. We are your family now,” Zar says as he parks in front of the garage.
I weakly smile, nodding at him as he squeezes my hand, then kisses it before letting it go. He gets out, then comes to open my door. Once out, Zar’s muscular arm pulls me close to him. We walk to the front door and just as Zar reaches for the panel, the door opens and GeeGee steps out.
“Sweet baby,” she whispers, holding her arms out to me. Zar releases me as I fall into her arms, needing her motherly touch.
“Nina,” Janae says, hugging us both. I begin to cry again, because I had two strong women showering me with the love my own momma couldn’t.
GeeGee raises her head to Zar. “The boys are in your office, go see to them. We’ll take care of Nina.”
Zar shakes his head. “GeeGee, I think I should be with Nina right now...”
GeeGee holds up her hand, stopping him as she gives him a comforting expression. “Balthazar, go see about the others. We got this. Come on, Nina.”
GeeGee and Janae escort me into the house. When we reach the stairs, Zar stops us.
“Nina, I’m just going to be in the office. Send one of them to come get me if you need me, okay?” He has a look of concern.
“I will,” I softly reply.
Zar leans down and kisses my cheek before professing, “I love you.” I see the truthfulness in his eyes as I gaze into them.
“I love you, too,” I echo. Zar smiles, kissing my cheek again before we leave him at the bottom of the stairs.
Chapter 12
Balthazar
I watch Nina and the ladies as they climb the stairs then disappear down the hall. My heart went out to her. How could a mother be so cruel? I think about my mother, Althaia Kourakos. She showered Alistair and I with so much love, we were drowning in it. Father would often tease her saying she was going to make us soft. I make a mental note to call her soon and thank her for being the best mother ever.
“How’s Nina,” Alistair asks as I enter my office. He and the others were sitting around, having drinks. He pours up a fresh glass of Cognac, then walks it over to me.
I take it, drinking half of the liquor before replying, “She’s upset, but it’s understandable. Her mother is a piece of work. I’m still trying to wrap my brain around the fact she was willing to sell her daughter for a few pieces of dope and probably some chump change. All I know is, as long as I’m around, which will be a long ass time, Nina’s mother better stay the fuck away from Nina if she knows what’s good for her.”
