She smiles. "You too. Thanks so much for helping."
Gabe looks between us then back at Marcus.
"How do you know her?" he asks Marcus.
"She was a server at your wedding, dude. Way to be a dick and not know anything about the people you hired."
Savannah lets out a small laugh.
Marcus is good for breaking the tension. I'm fine with that as long as he stays the hell away from my girl… Well, soon-to-be my girl.
Gabe cringes. "Sorry. I didn't realize."
"Don't worry about it," she smiles. "We're supposed to be invisible to the guests. That's what we're told."
Why does that make me irrationally angry? I want to punch anyone in the face who tells her to make herself invisible.
"Well, should we get started?" Marcus interrupts my train of thought.
We make our way into her apartment. Again, my protective side comes out when I get another glimpse of where she's been living on her own. I know Savannah is self-conscious about anyone else seeing her place. Luckily, Marcus says what we're all thinking, getting rid of any awkwardness.
"Savannah, you're kind of a badass in my mind now that I've seen where you've been slumming it. I like a girl who can hold her own," he says as he and Gabe work on disassembling the futon.
"Make a move on her, and I'll cut off your dick," I growl.
Savannah's head snaps to me. "Luke! That's horrible. He didn't mean it like that. Right, Marcus?"
Marcus shrugs. "You'll never know."
I roll my eyes while Gabe laughs.
"How was the honeymoon?" Savannah asks Gabe, showing how thoughtful she is.
Gabe stops what he's doing and meets her eyes, always the gentleman to show a woman respect. "It was incredible. Thanks for asking. I'm hoping we made a baby."
"Aww. You two will no doubt make gorgeous babies," she tells him.
I think I see Gabe blush slightly at her words. The man is a completely different person now that he's found Alexis. What was once a bitter, heartbroken shell of a man is now a happy, mushy guy who loves the women in his life.
They brought a couple of boxes for Savannah to throw her miscellaneous items into. While she works on filling them, the guys help me move the heavier things to the trailer.
We have the entire place packed up within the hour.
My brothers follow us to my house where we unload her things into the third section of my garage.
While we finish up, Savannah heads to the backyard with the dogs. I let out an exhausted sigh and shake their hands.
"Thanks for the help. I really do appreciate it on such short notice."
"Anytime, buddy." Marcus slaps my arm.
Gabe looks around, hesitating slightly. "Look, I don't want to be the downer of the group, but I have to say something," he starts. "I'm not going to ask what's going on between you two, I think it's obvious there's something. Just…be careful. I don't want you to get in trouble or worse, get her in trouble with the school."
I nod my head, hating that he even has to worry about something like that. "We don't plan on doing anything until school is over, but I appreciate your concern."
He takes a noticeable breath, like he can relax knowing we aren't having sex. There's no need to admit what happened already between her and I.
After I send them off, I walk into the backyard to find the dogs draped on top of Savannah as she lies on the patio couch under the wooden awning.
