She yelled, “Wait! Noah, stop! Let me talk to Lexi! Please!” Noah’s mom was looking on in horror. My brother showed nothing, but I could see the anger in his eyes as he watched Noah. Sally shouted, “I’m so sorry Lexi!” Before Noah had her out of the building.
No one was even focused on the ceremony anymore. Everyone was staring at me their eyes shimmering with shock and pity. My friend Ted was trying to get away from his brother to get to me. He looked furious. His whole family did. Noel, Noah’s brother, looked like he might be sick. His dad was holding him up. I could see the war in his eyes. He loved me like a daughter, but Noah was his son.
I’d just lost the family I thought I could have again. The parents I’d considered my own were gone. They’d pick Noah because they’d have to. It wasn’t fair to Sally to give me the love they always had. She was their daughter in law, not me.
I could feel my breakfast trying to make another appearance. I looked at my brother who nodded, giving me permission to leave. His eyes told me how sorry he was about what just happened. I walked slowly out of the room.
The second I was alone; I ran outside and threw up my breakfast. Thanking the War Goddess my brother had made me get on birth control the day I started dating Noah. I told him I didn’t need it, but he insisted. I took my pill at the same time every night.
Noah told me he was my string, and that he’d felt the pull. Why did he lie to me? Everything in me hurt because I loved Noah so much. Why wasn’t he my string? How could he walk towards me like that? Why was he so cruel? I knew he’d tell people he thought it was me pulling him, but I saw his smirk. He knew and smirked at me like a conquest he’d won. I suppose I was.
I took out my phone and dialed the one person who could help me right now, Princess Haley Cambridge Holloran. She answered, “Hello? Lexi? I thought you’d be off with the Troll.” I cried, “He is a Troll, you were right. I need you to pop to me. I need to get out here. Noah’s not my string. He told me he was last night, but he’s not. He’s some other girls and I… I can’t be here anymore.”
A pop sounded and golden eyed Haley stood beside me. She grabbed my hands and popped me to the Hackura realm where I proceeded to try to drink my troubles away. I just wanted to stop hearing on a loop how Noah said I was his string. Tears stung my eyes. LIAR!
Losing it
3 years later
Twenty-two year old Alpha Chase Daniels looked over his territory with a smile on his face. I was one of the only Alpha’s, besides the Conner’s brothers, to take over their pack at eighteen. My brother, Cameron Daniels, had recently left to lead his own pack. I’d relied on my brother since I’d taken over as Alpha. I was happy he was spreading his wings; he was meant to be an Alpha but I missed him. I was only one year older, and we’d always been close. I sought his advice often.
Cameron and our father had led my pack for seven months while I was training in Europe. They’d done an amazing job. My territory and pack was called the Yellow Hills. Our former Beta’s daughter, Molly Conners, was mated to Alpha Jackson Conners. The Conners brothers were the most powerful werewolves in the country. While we were already allies, their partnership definitely solidified the bond.
One of her younger brothers, Matthew Miller, who goes by Matt, is my Beta. The two younger brothers, Ollie, and Tyrion were on a mission for me. The day I took over we lost pack members to a rogue attack. Several were warriors, and they were trying to figure out what the hell had happened. A few rogues escaped and they were tracking them down.
It was weird that it was taking so long because rogues weren’t usually organized. They had infiltrated themselves into a pack, and felt they were close to getting answers. The youngest Miller family member is Jenna. She’d graduated recently and had dreams of being a teacher. Our families were close, as are most of the ranked wolves’ families.
Matt walked into my office declaring, “It’s strange without Cameron and Reagan here.” I sighed. Reagan was my brother’s mate, and my Gamma, Derrick Yancey’s sister. I agreed, “I know. We need our Luna.” Matt raised an eyebrow.
I asked “What? We do. Especially now that Reagan is gone. The pack can feel her absence.” Matt winced, “Not to beat this dead horse, but you’re still married.” I sighed, “Sophia is just scared right now. She’s worried those in her pack are waiting for a show of weakness on her part. Somehow us getting an annulment is weakness.”
Matt snorted, “Then she needs to kick them out of her pack. If you are serious about finding your mate, we need to take care of your current situation.” I disagreed, “I can’t just leave her in a bind.” Matt frowned, “You can. She consolidated her pack while you were here. Then she ran it without you here and she did an amazing job. What are you supposed to do? Let your mate run off because you are married?”
I winced, “It was supposed to be in name only. Hell, it IS in name only. The plan was to have it annulled when I left for training in Europe. I just wanted to help her out.” Matt put a hand on my shoulder, “I know. I agreed with the plan ONLY because they said it would be annulled while you were gone. We’ve sent the papers over multiple times, but she’s refusing to sign.” I cringed, “I know but now we’ve attended some functions together; it’s giving mixed signals. Maybe now that I’m back, I can talk sense into her.”
Matt wasn’t so sure, “I don’t know, man. She seems to think the second she loses you; she loses her pack. I don’t know if her dad told her she needed you or what, but I don’t think she’s going to go quietly into the night.”
I looked out the window, “Maybe I’ll be like Alpha Lucas and Alpha Eric. Their mates didn’t show up until they were older.” Matt laughed, “Hopefully we’ll have figured out your situation by then.” I smiled, “You were always good at puzzles.” Matt snickered then left.
I sat at my office watching my pack through my office window. My wolf, Bolt, started banging on our connection. I was immediately alert, “Bolt? What’s wrong?” Bolt howled, “Mate is near!” I stiffened, “What? How do you know?” Bolt answered, “Because I have wolf senses and I know she is near.” Fear paralyzed me.
Bolt growled, “Get up! Let’s go find mate!” I reasoned, “Bolt, we are married. She… she won’t understand.” Bolt growled, “NO! Mate has to understand.” I sighed, “What if she rejects us?” Pain hit my heart and Bolt howled in pain. He snarled, “No! NO, I won’t let that happen. YOU got married, not me! I said not to marry her!” I rubbed my head mumbling, “It wasn’t supposed to be permanent.”
Bolt was inconsolable. I tried to close our connection, but he kept pulling it back open to howl. I was getting a headache. I called Cameron. He had found Reagan two weeks after he turned eighteen on her birthday. He’d been circling her for years. A lot of us thought they were mates before it was official.
My dad and his Gamma were thrilled at the prospect of being family before Reagan turned eighteen. Her mom had a party ready to go and everything to celebrate their mating. The whole pack was thrilled that the Alpha’s son and Gamma’s daughter ended up being mates. She had snuck off for a midnight birthday run, and Cameron followed her. Once he caught her scent his howl could’ve woken the dead.
Cameron answered on the second ring, “Hello Big Brother, do you miss me already?” I admitted, “You have no idea.” Cameron immediately asked, “What’s wrong?” Bolt said in our connection, “Tell him your idiot ass might have cost me my mate.”
I sighed, “I just wanted to talk.” Cameron snorted, “I know that tone, but if you aren’t ready to tell me that’s fine.” I asked, “Were you ready to find out Reagan was your mate?” Cameron answered, “I’d been in love with her my entire life. I was going to be devastated if that pull I felt to her wasn’t as a mate. So yes, I was ready. Are you thinking of trying to look for your mate?”
I evaded, “The pack needs their Luna. Reagan’s absence is felt across the whole pack.” Cameron was quiet before asking, “What about Sophia?” I sighed, “Isn’t that the question? You know this wasn’t supposed to be a long-term deal.” Cameron dryly stated, “I know. Reagan yelled at me from the moment you signed the paper to be her husband. Even when you left. Actually, the ENTIRE seven months you were gone she yelled. When the annulment papers returned unsigned, she yelled. No man in the history of men have been yelled at more over someone else’s marriage than I have. It’s been almost four years of me being yelled at for you getting married. She HATES the entire thing.”
I reasoned, “I was trying to help out a friend. Sophia deserves to lead her pack.” Cameron assured me, “I know she does. Plus, I am always on your side because you’re my big brother. I’ll love you until I’m put in the ground. If you want to find your mate, you need to talk to Sophia. I can’t see that going well with the whole your being married deal.”
I heard someone enter the room. I asked, “Is there any chance my mate won’t care?” Reagan snorted then answered me, “Ok, so if your mate’s married….” I couldn’t stop my growl. I sighed linking, “Bolt, we can’t be upset about that.” Bolt growled, “I’ll kill him with my bare paws!” I huffed, “WE are married, we are not a virgin, so can’t be mad about those things.”
Bolt disagreed, “I can. I didn’t agree to get married. It’s not my fault my human half did. YOU can’t get mad, but I can. I can also rip people to pieces if they’d had sex with mate. She’ll be beautiful so of course people will want her. I’m an animal. You’re the rational one.”
