Bolt started howling in our connection again. I questioned him, “So, are you just going to give me a headache for the foreseeable future?” Bolt retorted, “I’m glad you’ve caught on.” I told him, “I’m sorry. I never meant to mess this up for us.” That gave him pause, but he continued howling.
Reagan sounded disappointed when she asked, “How can you think your mate will be fine with you being married if you can’t even let me finish my sentence about her being married? I TOLD you not to do this. Cameron, I swear I told you both.” I heard Cameron groan.
I sighed, “Sophia just…” Reagan yelled, “OHHH Sophia just. I swear if I didn’t love that girl to pieces, I would KICK IN HER IN THE TEETH! Sophia was raised to take over as Alpha. Just because some old fuddy duddies don’t want her to; doesn’t mean she should suffer. Or you. You both lost all your marbles with this plan. How am I younger than you, Chase? I am so much smarter. I still think it was suspect everyone was out of town when she asked you to do this for her.”
I sighed, “I just felt like she deserved to take over. No, not felt like; she does.” Reagan practically growled, “I’m not arguing that point, but she didn’t need to marry you to do it. Now, she’s backed herself into a corner of her own making.” I frowned, “She ran her pack just as well as any Alpha. She assisted Alpha Eric to bring his Luna home.”
Cameron cut in, “Not exactly but kind of.” I asked, “What the hell does that mean? She told me she did.” Reagan answered, “She did help, just not like she said she would. Some of the Black Mountain warriors were injured because she sent fewer warriors than she promised. I’m certain the Princess convinced Alpha Eric not to dissolve their alliance. He was furious.” I couldn’t believe she did that.
Cameron added, “He was CRAZY when they took his Fairy Hackura Princess from him. I mean he’s always crazy, but this was… I know wolves are supposed to be weak without their mate, but you could’ve fooled me. He was vicious. He TORE through a vampire club as if it was nothing, with no losses on our end. If that’s his wolf being weak, can I just say how glad I am he’s BOTH of our ally? Sophia is lucky that in the state he was in he didn’t rip her apart and take over her pack. I’m sure if he could’ve left the area his mate was in she would be no more.”
I asked, “Do you blame him for not being able to leave or being angry?” Cameron growled, “NO! Anyone who touched Reagan would die. I’d do just what Alpha Eric did to get his Luna back. I just know that I’d need you to do it for me because my wolf would not be able to go full on crazy without Reagan by my side. I don’t know how he did it.”
I laughed, “I think the same would be true in reverse for them. The Princess would go scorched earth if someone took Alpha Eric.” Reagan snorted, “You mean after the carnage we all saw that she caused here? Our pack is still terrified of her. I think people may hide when we invite them over. I might just have to go there and see her for a few years.” I laughed.
Cameron questioned, “Why would you go there?” Reagan snorted, “Because once we are more settled here, it’s my new personal mission to be her best friend. She’s amazing.” I shivered, “She chipped the strongest, and second strongest, Alpha’s in the world with a GPS tracking device. She slaughtered anyone who got in her way to get to him. We only saw the very end of her ripping apart your current pack. She was…”
Reagan interrupted, “Bad ass. The words you are looking for is bad ass. I’m going to find out her favorite things and become her best friend.” Cameron laughed, “She doesn’t stand a chance then. When is this happening?” Reagan thought about it then answered, “I think after the New Year we should be settled enough for me to start popping up in her life. Hopefully she enjoys my puns.” I had to laugh at that.
I told her, “You’d have to run, Reagan. She can pop not you, and she’s quite literal from what Matt says. He does have the inside track with Molly being her sister in law.” Reagan snorted, “After the plan she and her cousin came up with, because I think we all know she masterminded that plan, and it was them. Alpha Eric has always been strategic, but that plan reeked of Fairy and Hackura thought processes. She totally made that plan, and their mates agreed. Don’t you want to be their friend?” I winced, “She hates me.”
Cameron disagreed, “She doesn’t know you so she doesn’t hate you. You aren’t a witch or a warlock. If you were I’d say it would be a cold day in hell before she befriended you, but her mate does like you. He’s your role model, and he knows it.” Reagan snorted, “He’s his literal mentor.” That was true.
I grumbled, “You’re wrong. Luna Emmaline and Princess Luna Haley hate me. A double Princess and a Duchess. God, they are probably going to pull pranks on my pack because of me.” Reagan snorted, “They don’t hate you; they don’t like what you are doing. There's a difference. Besides, Cameron is right. They don't know you. If they did, they’d know you are a good person. Besides, their mates are the ones who matter because they are your allies. Once I become her new best friend, I’ll tell her about how great you are and she’ll come around. As far as Luna Emmaline, I definitely think you’re wrong. She was studying you intently when that all went down. She looked more worried for you than anything. She’s the Soul Searcher, if she didn’t like anyone it would be Sophia. She looked confused, but she clearly felt bad for you.”
Cameron agreed, “That’s true. Luna Emmaline told the future Alpha and Beta of Red Run along with Beta Dylan Frost who their mates were. Focus on getting her to like you first, big brother. She could give you that answer about your mate since you’re considering looking.” Little did he know my mate was around.
Reagan said, “Or get your annulment first, then find your mate. Don’t fuck up my relationship with my one day to be sister-in-law before I get to know her. Just make my current sister-in-law, my ex-sister-in-law.” I winced, “It’s not like that. You know that.”
Reagan took a serious tone, “Level with me because I’ve never asked this, and I never will again. Do you actually like Sophia? Everyone thought you were mates until you both turned eighteen. Their pack was rumbling with how strong we would be once you two mated.”
I answered without hesitation, “I never thought she was my mate. Sophia and I have always known that. We were always just friends, but we knew everyone wanted us together. We kissed ONCE when we were seventeen to see if there was anything there because everyone said there was. It was like kissing my sister.”
Cameron groaned, “Ew. Don’t make me think about kissing our little sister.” I retorted, “She’s only five so she won’t be kissing anyone for a VERY long time.” Reagan sighed, “I miss Susie. Why can’t I just get pregnant? We should have little ones, Cameron.” I asked, “Is that why you want to be the Princess’ best friend? To see if she can heal you?”
Reagan snorted, “Rude. You know I’m not like that. I want to be her best friend because she’s amazing. Besides, I have an appointment with a specialist next week. Our pack’s OB has a friend who specializes in infertility.” I wanted to hug her. I told her honestly, “I know you guys will be great parents.”
Reagan snorted, “Of course we will be. Aside from this one snafu with you marrying Sophia, we did an excellent job with you.” I laughed, “I’m older than you.” Reagan commented, “And yet somehow you are our child. Cameron, can’t I sneak away to see how the Fairy Princesses event is going?” Cameron laughed, “No. I’d miss you too much.”
Bolt and I perked up. Alpha Eric’s territory was on our border that meant y mate could be there. I tried to sound disinterested, “Fairy event?” Reagan sounded distracted, “Yes, one of her partial fairy events. Seriously, do you two EVER pay attention to the chatter? Everyone is losing their minds over this. She’s reaching out to a group of people who have been ignored. She’s their champion. They are allied with the werewolves because SHE is married to ALPHA ERIC CONNERS! Seriously, I don’t know what to do with you two sometimes. She is amazing. I will be her best friend, and NEITHER of you will mess that up for me.”
She meant me. She clapped her hand on Cameron’s desk and I could practically envision her pointing a finger at the phone, “So Chase, get Sophia to agree to your annulment. In all seriousness though, I want you to be happy. Are you happy?” I was getting a headache from Bolt’s constant howling. I answered, “Not really, no.” Reagan said, “Well there’s your answer.”
Susie stumbled into my office. I announced, “Our little sister just came in.” Reagan squealed, “Hi, Susie!” Susie clapped and ran to my desk, “Hi, Reagan! Daddy said I can come see you tomorrow.” Reagan informed her, “I have your room all set up for our first sleepover.”
My dad came in behind Susie. I told them, “I’ll let you go guys go. I’ll call you later, Cameron.” My dad spoke “Goodbye, Cameron.” Cameron greeted, “Hey, dad! Are you bringing Susie tomorrow?” My dad asked, “Who else would I trust with your little sister?” I smiled. That was predictable. Most people didn’t even know that she existed.
Susie was technically our half-sister, but none of us cared about that. My mom died in a rogue attack when Cameron and I were teenagers. A few years later my dad's second chance mate crossed paths with him. I had actually missed Susie more than anyone else when I was in Europe.
My dad had kept her a secret from everyone. Our allies didn’t even know Cameron and I had a little sister. He barely let her out of the main house. Most of the pack thought she was a rumor. A few knew she wasn’t. My stepmom tries to convince him to let her out, but I think after what happened to my mom he was scared.
As an Alpha, being scared is not an emotion we are used to, or comfortable with. I wouldn’t be surprised if Alpha Eric knew, but I doubt anyone else did. If Susie was going to start visiting Cameron then dad might have to prepare for people to find out. I hoped that happened. My sister was the brightest little star, and she deserved to live a full life outside in the real world.
Susie handed me an envelope, “Beta Alfred asked me to give you these.” I frowned. Beta Alfred Thomas was Sophia’s Beta. She, of course, knew about Susie, but Alfred shouldn’t have given her papers for me. My dad frowned too.
I asked, “Did he leave a message with you?” Susie thought about it then answered, “Oh ummm he seemed nervous. He did say to tell you he’s sorry, and he’s trying.” I opened the envelope and frowned. My stepmom, Nadine, came to the door. She firmly said, “Susie! Are you trying to avoid your bath time?” Susie shot me a pleading look.
Nadine stepped inside my office scolding her, “Don’t you shoot them those puppy dog eyes. You know they melt for you every time. Get up to your bath then it’s off to bed.” Susie gave me a hug then my dad. She waved, “Goodnight.” She turned to her mom, “Mommy, daddy is taking me for a sleepover with Cam and Reagan tomorrow.” Nadine laughed, “I know. I gave him the idea because Reagan is missing you.” Their voices faded.
