I met Matt outside and we shifted yet again running for our border. Sophia saw us, ran behind a tree, and shifted. She was frazzled, looking around everywhere. I questioned, “Are you alright, Sophia?” She asked, “What? Yes, I… I’m fine.”

Matt sarcastically retorted, “You look fine. You don’t have any sort of crazy eyed thing going on right now.” I nudged her then asked, “What’s up?” Beta Alfred stepped about from behind the trees. He accused me, “You took a prisoner of ours.” Sophia shook herself, “Huh? Oh yeah right. Why did you take Wallace?”

I said, “I want to have a chat. As I’m still your husband, I have the right to your prisoners.” Sophia snorted, “So, I can take your prisoners.” I scoffed, “You could try. Unlike whoever is guarding your dungeons they would’ve asked me.” Sophia glared at me, “They did ask me, you twit.” That surprised me, “You agreed?” Sophia sighed, “Maybe you can get answers where I couldn’t. If we can get information gathered, then this can all be over sooner.”

Matt was stunned, “You want this to be over?” Sophia threw her hands in the air, “Of course I do! This wasn’t supposed to be how it was. They were supposed to see my skills while Chase was gone! The Princess was right. I SHOULD be who all first born Alpha and even Beta she wolves look to. I’m running my pack, and if not for one stupid name on the traitors list I’d sign the damn papers. Get Wallace to talk about Alfred’s dad. Then this will be over and done with.”

I was in a state of shock. I didn’t care what her reason was. Bolt agreed, “Neither do I. This is the first time since sensing mate near I haven’t wanted to rip her head off.” That was definitely progress. I nodded, “I’ll do my best.”

Sophia said, “Please do. I need him back in seventy-two hours. I suppose we can just pass him back and forth.” I frowned, “Why do you need him back?” Sophia said, “I still want to get answers. I am merely allowing you to try your hand at them as well. We will pass him back and forth, or I’ll take him back.” Bolt growled, “Moment passed. She couldn’t get him back unless we let her. Our people wouldn’t hand him over if we said no.” I argued, “Apparently, neither would hers.” He huffed. I agreed, “Fine.”

Matt yelled, “HOLD ON!” We all turned back around. Beta Alfred sighed. Matt glared at them, “Is NO ONE going to ask about her one hundred and sixty degree turn on this subject?” I shrugged, “Who cares?” Matt raised his hand, “I do.”

Sophia snarked, “My reasons are none of your business. I want this over and done with. I’ve jumped on your train. Let’s get this done.” Matt emphatically stated, “Yeah, I don’t follow your orders. I’m just hoping whatever reason you have for jumping on the train, doesn’t cause you to jump off. You don’t get to toy with MY Alpha that way.” Alfred growled and Matt growled right back.

I interceded, “Let’s just put a pin in this. For now, and hopefully for a very long time, we are all on the same side.” Sophia smiled, “We have a drop dead date, but hopefully we can get this put to rest sooner.” I nodded.

Matt questioned, “If you weren’t out here pacing because we had your prisoner why WERE you out here pacing with crazy eyes?” Sophia nonchalantly replied, “I thought I smelled something.” Matt snorted. I linked him, “Let’s just go Matt.”

Matt’s head swiveled between Sophia and Alfred. He declared, “I don’t know what’s happening here, but I WILL find out.” Sophia challenged him, “You can try.” Matt growled, “I will more than try. You have Alpha blood, but Beta blood runs through my veins, sugar. Getting answers is what we do.”

Alfred huffed at him, and Sophia actually looked worried. If I cared I would be intrigued. I linked Derrick, “Are you back?” Derrick answered, “I just got back. We found a hard drive. It’s pretty damaged, but we’ve got a techy warrior who geeked out about trying to pull data off it. He loves the Hood, the person, and the people. He has requested that if we get information if we get word to The Hood himself, he gets to deliver the data. I made the deal.”

Fine by me. My future brother in law was clearly not my fan. I told him, “Great. Meet us at the dungeons.” Derrick sounded excited, “FINALLY! Somewhere to work off my angry energy. I keep getting denied. First Sophia’s people just HAND me Wallace, then the Hood killed everyone we were going to kill. I’ll bet I beat you guys there.” I snorted then waved to Sophia.

Matt and I took off. Derrick was right, he’d beat us there. Derrick turned then frowned asking, “What’s up, Matt?” Matt told him, “Alpha Sophia is suddenly gung-ho to get the annulment she’s been pushing off. Chase here isn’t curious about the change of heart she’s got going on.”

Derrick frowned, “She wants to sign the papers already though. She has a date ready to go in her mind.” Matt told him, “She LET you take Wallace so we could pass him back and forth. She wants to see if we can get answers to settle this sooner.” Derrick’s eyebrows shot to the roof, “Did she now?”

I huffed, “Again who cares?” Bolt snorted, “Not me.” Derrick and Matt answered simultaneously, “We do.” I groaned, “For the love of GOD why? She’s finally onboard.” Matt raised an eyebrow, “On board would be handing the papers over to us signed. She suddenly has a sense of urgency. It’s fine. You and your Alpha blood don’t understand, but the Beta and Gamma blood have got you.” I rolled my eyes.

Derrick said, “Whatever changed her mind could change it back, and she could stall until her February date.” I snarled, “Then let’s go get some answers from Wallace then.” I walked into the dungeons.

I didn’t have to go far until Wallace came into view. I had to hand it to Sophia, she’d done some work on the man. I growled, “Hello, Wallace.” Wallace lifted his head before looking back down. His hatred and contempt for me came through in his tone, “Hello, Alpha Chase.” I smirked. This was going to be fun.

Too good for the Troll

Lexi couldn’t stop herself for telling Chase she was falling for him. His reply stunned me. Love? For a very long time I thought those words were a lie, but when I looked in Chase’s eyes; I couldn’t deny his honesty. He did love me. I let those feelings wash over me.

I searched myself realizing my own feelings. I loved him too, but I couldn’t say it to him. Not yet. This was happening so fast. I needed a second before I could admit those words to him. It was silly, but somehow holding onto those words made me feel like he couldn’t break me. It was an illusion, and I knew that. Chase Daniels had the ability to destroy me.

The sincerity in Chase’s voice when he told me I didn’t need to be ready to say I love you back to him made the last bit of rubble from my walls that he’d broken down evaporate. The Lieutenant had gotten really mad when I wasn’t ready to drop the love bomb. He didn’t talk to me for a week until I went to him, begging for him to break the silence. I told him I did love him and then everything went back to normal for us. He was back to the kind, loving person I thought he was. I was starting to realize his love had been conditional all along. He’d conditioned me. What an ASS!

In this moment though, I was more scared than I’d ever been in my whole life. If Chase hurt me, I’d never climb out of that hole. My stomach dropped and I realized something. Chase was going to go after the group that had stabbed me.

That meant Heath and Chase would meet. Heath would deal with Noah first and lock his family down. Then he’d go after the people that did this. Heath was angry, and I was hurt. That was not a good combination. Plus, Sally was hurt. It wasn’t going to end well for the person who did this.

I was both happy and sad Matt held Chase back from killing the Lieutenant on the street. Haley would’ve had to use magic to make everyone forget because Chase couldn’t go to jail. I was sad because I wanted the Lieutenant gone. I knew his demise was rapidly approaching if Bjourn agreed the tape was Noah causing a problem. If Haley got to Noah first it was going to be a blood bath.

She’d had years to think of how to kill him. I shivered. Or Haley might just hand him over to Bjourn to mess with first. Bjourn was renowned for his skills at torturing people. Honestly, even if Bjourn disagreed, which I doubted, the Lieutenant’s actions were leading towards his death unless he did a quick turnaround.

We walked to my car together holding hands. I could tell we were being followed. Heath was very predictable when it came to me. I shook our tail. Heath was mad, but he knew I’d do it. Hell, the tail did too. Chase had gone rigid during our conversation. His eyes were closed, and his face was contorted in pain. I quickly ended the call so I could explain my brother didn’t actually mean that he’d lock me away.

I assured him I wasn’t going on lock down. Heath was just worried. I don’t get mad because once I gave him cause to worry. When I was on drugs, he was worried and I’d shut him out. I couldn’t fault him for being a little crazy about me. I’d started the trend. Maybe he would’ve been like this anyway, but we’d never know.

When we got home I’d decided to cook a meal that a French chef taught me how to make. It was simple, but it was delicious. I loved cooking beside him. I had to correct him a few times, but I caught the glint in his eyes. I turned back to hide my smile. He was doing it on purpose, so that I’d correct him. That was sweet.

I had to admit I was touched that he’d offered to help. Noah would just go turn on the TV and leave me to the cooking part of our dates. Once I’d put the chicken in the oven, he was on me. His hands were suddenly everywhere, wanting me to make promises I couldn’t. I wouldn’t lie to him, and sometimes getting hurt came with who I was.
