“Those sound like great cakes,” I said, hoping it would spur him to say goodbye so I could finish the call and get back to the woman currently driving me crazy with the kisses she was trailing from my neck to my collarbone.

“And a Batman cake,” he said. “And Paw—“

“Jaxon, did you steal my phone again?” I heard what sounded like my mom’s voice in the background.

A second later, Jaxon quickly said, “Bye, Dad,” and then hung up.

When the line disconnected, I tossed my phone to the side and showed Emerson just what happened when she teased me like that.

“This is a nice surprise,”Emerson said when she walked into the kitchen the next morning. I had woken up before her and decided to make her favorite strawberry and Nutella crepes and green smoothie for breakfast

“I’m glad you like it.” I glanced over my shoulder to take her in. She was wearing a silky pink button-up pajama top with matching pants, her hair falling out of the braid she’d put it in the night before.

And I couldn’t help but think that she was beautiful like this.

I turned back to the crepe that was ready to flip, and she slipped her arms around my waist and kissed my back.

After flipping the crepe over, I closed my eyes and just enjoyed the feel of her body pressed against my back, her head resting between my shoulder blades.

This was exactly how I wanted every morning to be from now on. It was perfect.

“Did you sleep well?” she mumbled.

I turned off the stove and scooped the crepe off the skillet and onto the top of the pile of crepes I had on the counter. “I did.” Then I turned around to pull her in to my arms. “It was a good night.”

She nestled against my chest, a slow smile slipping on her lips. “Itwasa good night.”

After kissing on the couch for hours, we had stayed up talking and laughing, and yes, kissing even more until we could barely keep our eyes open. Then, when we realized we were human and really did need sleep to survive the next day, we had gone to her room and spent the night wrapped up in each other’s arms.

It had been the perfect night.

This whole weekend had been amazing, actually.

And if it was up to me, I’d have it just go on forever.

We hadn’t exactly talked about what was going on between us, or where we both saw us going from here. But if last night was any indication of what might come next, I had a lot of faith that when all was said and done, we’d be getting back together.

I didn’t want to jinx it or anything, so I wasn’t going to push the topic until it seemed like Emerson was ready to officially put a title on what we were. But for all intents and purposes, I was all in and excited about the direction we were headed.

“Should we eat?” Emerson asked after a minute.

I kissed the top of her head and breathed her in. “Sure.”

So we each filled our plates and glasses and then took them to the table.

“This looks so good.” Emerson picked up her knife and fork and started cutting in. “How did I get so lucky?”

I smiled, feeling my chest warm over how much she appreciated the small gesture. “I’ve been wondering the same thing all weekend.”

And when our eyes met, she got a bashful look on her face, her cheeks tinged with pink.

She was adorable when she blushed.

“What time do you pick up Jaxon from your mom’s today?”
