Maybe I was just coming down with something.
“Is it weird being at events like this with him?” Landon asked, glancing at Vincent who was just taking his seat on the other side of the table. The tables were arranged in a long, banquet-style seating, so thankfully, he wasn’t straight across from me but three chairs down instead.
“It’s a little awkward,” I said quietly, hoping Vincent couldn’t hear. “But we have a kid together and see each other a couple times a week, so it’s not too bad.”
Though, seeing him chat with the various bridesmaids when we’d walked in had definitely turned up the jealousy factor as I’d tried to figure out if one of them was his date for tomorrow.
Kira’s college roommate was gorgeous and I knew she hung out with Derek and Kira here and there. Maybe they’d set them up.
But Kira would have warned me about something like that, wouldn’t she?
“How old is your kid?” Landon asked, picking up his glass of water and taking a sip.
“He’s four.”
Landon smiled. “That’s a fun age.”
“Do you have kids?” I asked. I had noticed earlier that he wasn’t wearing a wedding band on his hand, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t have kids of his own.
“Not yet.” He set his water back on the table. “But my brother has a couple of kids. I get to see them a lot.”
“That’s fun,” I said. “Would you ever want kids of your own?”
“Sure.” He shrugged. “I’d love to have one or two someday when I find the right girl.” He shot me a smile.
It took me a moment to register it, but…was he flirting with me?
My cheeks warmed and I looked down briefly before swallowing and saying, “So I take it that you’re single then.”
“You would be correct.” He nodded. “And what about you?”
“Same.”
“Really?” He sat up a little straighter and furrowed his brow like he was actually surprised. “Are all the guys in Denver blind or something?”
My blush deepened.
Who knew talking to a near stranger could be so good for my bruised ego right now?
I picked up my glass, needing something to do with my hands. “I just haven’t found the right guy yet, I guess.”
“You never know.” His brown-eyed gaze went from my eyes to my mouth, and then back to my eyes again before he leaned even closer and whispered, “Maybe you just did.”
And when he winked at me, the warmth that had been on my cheeks throughout our conversation spread through my whole body.
Was he actually hinting that he might be interested in being that “right guy”? Because even though I barely knew anything about him, the thought that someone found me interesting in person after all my failed dates did good things for my soul.
He did say he only wanted one or two kids, right? That was better than Dave’s basketball team.
So even though I knew the chances of anything actually going anywhere after this weekend, I decided to be flirtatious for a minute. I looked up through my eyelashes and said, “Maybe I just did.”
And though I hadn’t meant to, I found my gaze drifting toward Vincent to make sure he wasn’t watching.
But he was looking straight at us. And from the dark look in his eyes, I imagined he may have been listening to every single word.
