"What is it?" I stood without thinking and smashed my head into the top bunk. "Motherfucker!"

Silas rushed to me and examined my head before he pulled me against him, wrapping his arms around me. "Shit, bunny. My dad found the alpha dead on the fourteenth of March, twenty-six years ago."

Chapter Eleven

Ivy

My body went numb, and I slumped against Silas, who tightened his hold on me and walked me toward the bed. We sat down, and he touched my cheek with the tips of his fingers.

"Talk to me. Are you okay?" His eyes told me he was truly concerned. "Ivy?"

I blinked and shook my head.

How could I be okay when it seemed likely that my birth and the alpha's death were connected to each other? "So who's my mother then? Do you think she killed him?"

"Baron was in love with being an alpha, and everyone respected him. It makes no sense that someone would kill him unless they had something to gain." He shook his head. "What would your birth mother gain?"

"Freedom?" If no one knew he got a woman pregnant, maybe he was hiding her away somewhere against her will, or maybe I read too much fiction. "Your father and Cole's father accused each other." I scooted back on the bed and leaned up against the wall. "I think your dad knew about me."

Silas's face fell and his frown deepened. It wasn't a good look on him. I definitely preferred his smile. Something about his frown made him seem harsh, like he'd rip my heart out of my chest and eat it.

"Why do you think that?"

"He paid to have me adopted far away from here." I put my hand on my forehead. I felt cold, like I was coming down with something. Something called shock.

A mixture of emotions passed over Silas's face. First shock and then anger. He stood and glared down at me. "That's impossible. He wouldn't do that."

"Unless there's another pack member that's a biker with blonde hair, green eyes, and a scar on his face."

"Where did you get this information?" Silas began pacing, his arms crossed over his chest.

"The social worker that handled the adoption. Your father paid him half a million dollars. So, please, continue telling me how your father didn't know."

He stopped in his tracks and turned toward me. "My family has never had that kind of money."

"Well, he got the money somehow. Unless the social worker was lying, but what would be the point of that?" The social worker risked a lot by telling me about the money, so it was doubtful it was a lie. "Where's your father, Silas?"

"I don't know where he is." His voice was strained.

"I find that hard to believe. He just up and left?" I wondered if he was in the missing wolf database. I'd have to have Eli look.

"As soon as I was ready to become alpha, which was questionable, he just left. I haven't heard from him since. I don't-"

The door opened and Xander came in, his brown hair still wet from his shower and dripping onto the shoulders of his t-shirt.

He looked from me, to Silas, and back to me again. "What's going on here?" He strode into the room, stopping in front of Silas. "Should you even be in here alone with her?"

"Xander, he's fine." I laid down on the bed, resting my head on a fluffy pillow and pulling a blanket over me. "Let's nap and figure everything out later."

I wanted to figure everything out, but also knew getting to the bottom of my origins might take some expert level sleuthing. Was it possible my mother wasn't a wolf? That could explain why my wolf looked different and the delay in shifting for the first time.

Xander moved toward the bed and then turned to look at Silas. "Is there a reason you're still here?"

"I'm taking a nap too. Your arrival this morning woke me up well before I was ready." He went to the door and shut it firmly, flicking the lock.

Silas toed off his boots while pulling his shirt off by the back of the neck. Men just didn't know what that action did to women. Or maybe they did, and that's why they did it. My eyes were glued to him. Being a wolf sure had some perks, like bodies that would take hours a day in the gym and plates full of spinach to achieve.

"Not sure how I'm going to be able to sleep in here with you. I don't know you." Xander crossed his arms over his chest and didn't move from where he was.
