My eyes widened so much that I thought my eyeballs might pop out of their orbit. He was talking about the three of them sharing me like I was a piece of meat. I opened my mouth to say something but shut it when Lucifer shook his head at Ric in exasperation.
"I think you two are making Lia uncomfortable." Kai moved his hand from the back of the booth and put it on my shoulder. "Just because your own daughter has four men, doesn't mean every woman you encounter is made for that."
"Wait, just a second. You don't think I can handle three men? And what does he mean your daughter has four men? You said she got married." I narrowed my eyes at Lucifer and relaxed back into Kai's arm.
He ran his thumb along the top of my shoulder, and goosebumps popped up on my skin.
"She did. To four men. Three angels and a demon to be exact." He said it so evenly that he had to be an excellent shit-talker or he was telling the truth. I looked at Ric, who nodded.
"And you're okay with that? Your daughter with four men? How old is she?" If I was honest, I was pretty curious about how her relationship with four men worked.
Did they all share a bed? What was the sex like? Of course, I couldn't ask Lucifer those questions because it was his daughter.
"It's not like she would care even if I didn't approve. She's fairly independent considering she's eighteen. I'll be honest, I wasn't around much while she was growing up, so she had to be."
A million questions swirled through my head right alongside the champagne. I lifted the glass that Kai had just refilled and took a drink. I should probably slow down my drinking a bit; champagne always messed me up.
"What does her mother think about it?" The table fell silent at my question, and Lucifer shifted in his seat.
Finally, Ric broke the silence. "We should go downstairs and mingle. It's almost midnight. I need to find somebody to kiss because I'm definitely not going to kiss you." He looked right at Lucifer.
Lucifer looked tense as we slid out of the booth, and we made our way downstairs and into the crowd. Most of the tables had been pushed to the sides, leaving the room open. Waitresses dressed as mermaids walked around holding trays of hors d'oeuvres and drinks.
A pang of jealousy went through me as Ric joined a group of women. One in particular giggled and touched his arm. I don't know what came over me, but I really wanted to rip off her arm.
"Green is not a good color on you," Kai said in my ear, his lips brushing against it. I shivered at the touch and averted my eyes from the scene that was making me so jealous.
"I don't know what you're talking about." I shrugged and grabbed another glass of champagne as a waitress passed by. "Why mermaids?"
"Why not mermaids? Do you have something against them?" He laughed and wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me closer. "I'd like to see you dressed up as a mermaid."
I rolled my eyes and looked around to see where Lucifer had gone. He had followed us down the stairs, but then he seemed to disappear.
"He's at the bar. Lilith is kind of a sore spot for him." My eyes widened at the mention of Lilith. Did he mean that Lilith? The same Lilith that left the Garden of Eden because she wanted to be on top?
"As in…" I placed my empty champagne glass on a tray as another mermaid passed by.
"The one and only. But that's not my tale to tell."
It was one minute until midnight, and my heart started beating wildly. Was I actually going to go through with it and kiss Kai? I hadn't let myself feel anything for anybody for quite a while.
There was the whole Widow thing, but there was also my failed marriage which left me feeling bitter. I didn't want to go down that road again; it was too painful.
"Five… Four… Three… Two… One… Happy New Year!" The restaurant erupted in cheers as blue and green confetti bombs were set off as the new decade and year began.
I turned towards Kai and bit my lip. Maybe it was the champagne talking, but I did really want to kiss him. I stepped toward him and tilted my head up.
He raised his eyebrows as if he couldn't believe I was actually going to go through with it and then shut his eyes and leaned in.
I'm not a believer that kissing can cause fireworks. But as soon as his lips touched mine, I felt explosions going off inside my body. I leaned in closer and nudged at his lips with my tongue.
He let out a small groan of approval and opened his mouth. His hands slid around my waist and pulled me even closer. We devoured each other like two starved beings, our tongues tangling and teeth occasionally scraping against each other’s. It was like everything else in the room drifted away, and all that was left was us.
I pulled away, feeling dizzy, and touched my lips with my fingertips. In all my thirty-two years, that was single-handedly the best kiss I'd ever had.
"Wow, that was…"
"I don't know what to say." Kai ran his hand through his hair and laughed. "Should we do it again?"
