Chapter Ten
Kelsey
I look at Adam. He is looking like he’s focused on something in his head. I bet he’s trying to come up with a plan out of this mess. I don’t think he’ll come up with anything, because I didn’t come up with anything either.
We’ll be fine, I try to tell him with my eyes. His eyes flutter closed, and then he looks back at Harrison.
“Are you sure you want to do this? Who will lead the mob after you’re dead? You will leave the entire mob without a leader,” Adam tries to convince him, desperation in his expression.
Harrison throws his head back in a laugh, “You think I’m stupid enough not to have a replacement in place?”
“What are you talking about?” Adam throws his hands up, completely confused. I envy him the possibility to move.
“I’ve been training the next leader for years, actually. He looks like you, only thinner and better. Not a backstabbing son of a bitch.” Harrison’s sick smile splits his face and I feel sick to my stomach. My long and hard work on this case was for nothing. I felt my eyes fill with tears.
“Who?” Adam eyes him with suspicion. What is going on here? I think.
“That doesn’t have to bother you. I will only tell you that he is also very good at pretending to be dead.” He winks at Adam with a secretive, arrogant smile playing on his lips.
Harrison turns around to walk toward me, and I see Adam dive toward him. They begin fighting, and I feel completely helpless. I wince every time Adam takes a punch from Harrison which, frankly, isn’t many considering Harrison’s age. Very quickly Adam gets the upper hand, and I see how he walks to a nearby table while Harrison is trying to stand up from the ground. Adam picks up a knife and walks back to Harrison. He grabs a handful of Harrison’s hair and he slits his throat, ending the miserable life of this idiot.
Adam looks at me. “Are you alright?” he asks me, and I nod.
“The pilot.” I point my head in his direction. Adam immediately understands. He gives me the knife he was holding so that I can cut through the piece of plastic that holds my hands tied together. By the time I’m free, Adam is walking back my way.
“Do you know how to fly a plane?” he asks in all seriousness.
I giggle, a little insane from stress and the absurdity of the question and then immediately stop when I realize the severity of the situation. “No, I don’t. Did you kill the pilot?”
“Yeah, I did. And if we want to keep breathing, we have to figure out how to land this thing,” I stand up to walk to the cabin, but Adam pulls me into a quick, tight hug.
“Adam,” I reluctantly pull away, “we don’t have time for this.” As if to prove the truthfulness behind my words, the plane gets into turbulence.
We hurry to the cabin, trying to land the plane safely.
“I have no idea what to do,” Adam complains, powerlessness clear in his voice.
“We will have to try our best.” I throw the dead pilot out of the pilot seat to the end of the cabin and sit.
Adam sits in the seat next to me and turns to me. “Kelsey? I have to tell you something..”
I cut him off, “You’ll tell me when we land.”
By some miracle, a while later, we land. It isn’t a smooth landing, that’s for sure, but it’s a safe one.
I hear Adam let all of the air in his lungs out as I whisper through tears, “I can’t believe we made it.”

I was just let out of the hospital and my first steps are to the CIA base.
“Well done,” Agent Franklin greets me as soon as I step out of the elevator.
“Thanks. So, what happens now?” I ask him immediately. I am incredibly curious about Adam’s fate.
“There is a ceremony next week, you’ll be getting medals,” Agent Franklin beams with pride. He was my mentor when I first started here and it’s an incredibly amazing feeling that I finally, after all those years, made him proud.
“What about Adam?” I couldn’t let go of the question that’s been at the front of my mind for the last two days.
