“Stop.” Bianca sighed. “Please.”
I grunted and shut up, opting to reach out and rub her belly. “How are our babies?”
“Good. I felt them moving a little this morning.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Dom demanded, frowning. He reached out and placed his hand beside mine.
“You were asleep. You looked too peaceful to wake,” she said, smiling at him.
“Always wake me, wasp.” He stroked her belly gently. “Always.”
“OK.” She didn’t look like she wanted to argue. I winked at her, knowing the tiny smile on her face meant she definitely wasn’t going to wake him when he was asleep. I doubted Dom got much sleep anyway. I know I didn’t.
“Good afternoon,” Doctor Carson said, coming into the room. “I’m glad you guys could make it. Bianca, how are you feeling?”
“Tired.” She yawned and rubbed her eyes.
“That’s pretty normal. Aside from the tiredness, anything else?” Doctor Carson washed her hands and looked at Bianca over her shoulder.
“Sore. A little upset stomach. Sometimes I throw up.”
I got up, knowing Doctor Carson wanted to use the ultrasound machine beside me, and moved to stand next to Dom. I crossed my arms over my chest, irritated that I couldn’t hold Bianca’s hand like Dom was.
“OK. Did the lollipops in the kit help at all?”
“A little.”
“I’ll send you back with some more.” Doctor Carson dried her hands and went to examine Bianca. We watched as she poked and prodded at her, asking her various questions before she went to her machine and grabbed the wand, then squirted some gel onto Bianca’s bare belly.
“What are you doing?” Dom asked, tensing beside me.
“Ultrasound. It won’t harm the babies. We’re going to check on them today, maybe get lucky enough to get their sexes, andmake sure everything is going well inside Mom.” She swirled the wand on the gel, making Bianca flinch.
“You OK?” Dom was immediately on his feet.
“I’m fine, babe. It’s just a little cold.”
He relaxed, and I smiled. He cared so damn much that it warmed my heart.
He scowled at me before focusing on Bianca again as Doctor Carson took some measurements. We watched as the babies blipped onto the screen.
“I-is that them?” Dom asked, his voice thick with emotion as he squeezed Bianca’s hand.
“It is,” Doctor Carson said, smiling.
I peered at the screen, my heart in my throat. Two beautiful babies. Our babies.
“They’re moving a lot,” Dom murmured.
“They really are.” Doctor Carson let out a soft laugh. “Let’s get a couple more pictures, and then we can try to see if we have boys, girls, or both.”
My guts clenched.
I was excited beyond belief to know what we were having. I used to think I’d want a boy, but right now, I just wanted to have my baby. I didn’t care what the sex was. It sounded so cliché, but healthy and happy was all I was aiming for.
A few moments of silence fell over the room as Doctor Carson took some more photos. Finally, she smiled.
“There we go. Baby A kept putting a foot in the way, but Baby B. . .”
