“I…” When he trailed off, Tessa finally turned to look at him. “No, Tessa, I don’t think any part of you is Fae.”

“So I am a Legacy then?”

“Perhaps.”

She hummed, her knee beginning to bounce. Then she was leaning between the seats to speak to Luka. “What do you think I am?”

Luka shot her a quick glance before focusing on the road once more. “Vexing.”

“Funny,” she groused, reaching to mess with the music. Luka slapped her hand away and she frowned. “Why can’t Axel and Kat ride with us? His music choices are better than yours.”

She saw his gaze flash to the rearview mirror, presumably connecting with Theon’s.

“We don’t know Katya well enough to trust her yet,” Luka answered, sighing when she reached for the music again and letting her change the song.

“Where were you last night?”

“What?” Luka asked, glancing at her side-long again.

“You weren’t at the townhouse all night,” she answered, finally settling on a song.

“How can you possibly know that?”

Tessa shrugged, drawing patterns on the leather console with her finger.

“Tessa,” Luka growled. “How do you know I wasn’t there?”

She sighed in resignation. “I came to talk to you in the middle of the night. You weren’t in your room.”

“When was this?” Theon demanded.

She looked back at him over her shoulder. “In the middle of the night. I just said that.”

“Where was I?”

“Sleeping.”

His eyes narrowed. “Why didn’t you wake me up?”

“Because I don’t like you.”

That muscle ticked yet again. “What were you going to talk to him about?”

Tessa bit her lip, already knowing how he was going to react to this. “To see about taking these bands off for a while because my power is unbearable right now.”

Theon’s eyes widened briefly in disbelief before the expected anger took over. “We just talked about this,” he gritted out.

“This morning,” she retorted, sitting back in her seat and crossing her arms. “This waslast night.”

Theon took a deep breath, visibly calming himself as he swiped his hand down his face. “As soon as this hearing is over, I will take you to the magic training arenas.”

“What if they decide I can no longer be your Source?” she asked curiously.

“They won’t.”

“But what if they do?” she pushed.

Theon straightened as they pulled up to the Tribunal. Tucking his phone into an inside suit pocket, he answered, “No one is taking you from me. Ever.”
