‘I might just do that. She’s hotter than you anyway,’ he said as he grabbed his credit card and jacket and left.

‘Just checking you’re ok?’

It was 9 pm on Sunday, and Em had called Lucy, who was sitting on her sofa pondering what to do next about her love life.

‘I’m fine,’ Lucy replied without thinking. Was she? Disappointed but not surprised would be a better description. After all, Adam was the latest in a long line of liars and cheaters.

‘Adam didn’t deny it then?’

‘He tried, but he realised I knew far too much for him to give me some flannel, I guess. And there’s at least one other woman.’

‘Seriously! What a shit. Are you going to tell his wife?’

‘I considered it. But why spoil things for her purely for the satisfaction of getting revenge on Adam? She probably knows already but chooses to ignore it. And if she doesn’t know, it’s not my job to tell her.’ Plus, Lucy didn’t want any backlash. If Eve were blissfully ignorant of Adam’s philandering ways, she would probably assume Lucy was some bunny-boiling maniac. Lucy hadn’t missed the extremely loving look Eve had given Adam when he came out of his house this morning.

Lucy changed the subject. ‘How are you and Jack?’

‘We’re fine. He’s off to London tomorrow to discuss his latest television programme.’

‘I didn’t mean in general. Did you ask him to marry you?’

‘Are you sure you want to know?’

‘Of course I do. Just because I seem to find more than my fair share of arseholes doesn’t mean I begrudge you any happiness.’

Em filled her in on the proposal.

‘Wow. That’s different.’ It was a complete contrast to Sam and Ella’s proposal - he’d got down on one knee at the top of the Eiffel Tower when he proposed to Ella. ‘I can honestly say that you’re the first couple I’ve heard of who agreed to get married during an argument in a car park.’

‘You know we don’t like to do anything the normal way,’ Em said with a laugh. At least she looked genuinely happy.

‘Congratulations!’

‘I’m just relieved we’re back on an even keel again. Don’t say anything to anyone yet. I need to tell Dad, and Jack needs to tell his parents before we go public.’

‘And Nancy? She doesn’t miss a trick. There’s no way she won’t notice that you and Jack have got engaged.’

‘We might have to tell her first.’

‘So when’s the big day?’

‘Give us a chance. We’ve not worked out when or where yet. But I hope you’ll be my maid of honour again.’

‘Of course, I will.’

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.Come on, Lucy Thomas, if you ever want a family, you’re going to have to up your game.

‘You’re in early. It’s not even 8 o’clock yet.’ Lucy’s PA, Kizzy, hung her jacket on the office coatstand.

‘I couldn’t sleep, so I thought I may as well crack on with my To Do list,’ Lucy said.

‘Isn’t Sunday night an Adam night? You’re always in late after those.’ Kizzy gave her a knowing look.

‘I’ve told him where to go.’ Lucy updated Kizzy on the weekend’s events.

‘What a first-class shit! So you’re back on the dating apps then?’
