I turn to the Elite Members just as my phone rings. Lilith’s name flashes across the screen, but when I answer it, a man speaks.

“Should have kept a better eye on my niece, Santos.”

The call ends before I can reply.

Today has been a dream. I still can’t believe Dimitri and I are married. I smile down at the gold band sitting above my engagement ring.

I’m just about to settle into bed when Diego rushes into my room, grabbing my hand.

“Diego, what is it?”

He leads me to the room he shares with Clara, pointing to the window. His green eyes are wide with fear. I move toward him, pulling him to my side.

“Was someone there?”

He nods his head.

“Okay. Let me take a look.”

We’re on the second floor, so the chances of him seeing something are unlikely, but I still want to check. I’m almost to the window when something slams into the back of my head, making me fall to the ground. Pain makes my vision waver, and I try to push myself to a sitting position, only to be knocked down.

“Stay there, you little bitch, while I get the girl.”

Somewhere far away, I think I hear Diego crying. But it hurts too much to stay awake. I give into the darkness with my last thoughts on my children.

“Momma,” Diego sobs. “Wake up.”

His sweet voice has my eyes opening, even though it hurts.

“I’m okay, baby,” I whisper. “Is the man still in here?”

He shakes his head and points to the door. The man said he was going to get the others! My stomach lurches and I force myself up, even though it hurts.

“I need you to stay in here, Diego. I need to find the girls and Nanny Odell. Hide until I come back, okay?”

He shakes his head. “Don’t go, Momma!”

My heart breaks and I pull him close.

“I have to, sweet boy. Now, be brave for me, okay?”

He nods and moves toward his bed, going under it. When I’m sure he’s safe, I stumble toward the door, opening it. I hear nothing as I cross the room, going to the nursery. Both Isadora and Raquel are in their cribs, fast asleep.

“Thank god,” I say, as I check on both of my little girls.

That means the man was looking for Clara. I try to think where she was before I went to my room. She was in the kitchen with Miranda. Quietly, I leave the nursery and peek into Miranda’s room. She’s not there, but her phone is.

I reach for it, trying to unlock it, but I don’t know her code. Instead, I press the button that calls 911.

When the operator answers, I say, “My name is Lilith Santos. Someone broke into my home and attacked me. My children are in danger. We need help!”

The operator asks the address and then tells me to stay on the line. But I can’t do that.

I say, “I’m leaving the phone with my son, Diego.”
