I slip across the hall to Diego’s room and hand him the phone.
“Help is on the way, sweet boy. Just stay on the phone. Okay?”
He nods and I slip out of the room, making my way to the first floor. When I reach the landing, I spot Miranda on the floor. She’s been struck in the back of her head and is bleeding, but I can see the rise and fall of her chest. She’s still alive. Thank god for that. In the kitchen, I hear Clara crying. I move without thinking and come to a stop when I see the sight before me.
Uncle Wolfe stands in front of Clara, making it so she can’t leave the kitchen. Rage swirls deep inside of me and I grab the nearest item, swinging. Uncle Wolfe cries out as the jar hits the back of his head, breaking. He spins, facing me, and Clara rushes around him, hugging the back of my leg. I walk backward, trying to put distance between us and Uncle Wolfe, but he follows.
“You stupid little bitch. You’ve been ruining things from the day you were born!”
He tries to grab me, but I maneuver myself and Clara away from him.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You wouldn’t, would you?” Spittle flies from his mouth. “Let me spell it out for you, then. I’m your father. Not my piece of shit brother.”
“You’re lying.”
“I wish I was. When my wife couldn’t produce a son, I hoped your mother would. She failed me twice!” A vein pops out in his neck. “She was useless, just as you are!”
I back up, making sure Clara is still behind me.
He asks, “How did you know I was going after Santos’ son?”
“What are you talking about?”
Uncle Wolfe makes a sound. “Stop lying!”
“You need to leave. Now. The police are on their way.”
“They won’t get here in time to save you.” He sneers. “By the time Santos finds out what’s happened to you at his eldest daughter, it will be too late.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure of that,” Dimitri says as he walks into the kitchen, gun drawn.
Wolfe laughs. “This is rich. How did you get here so fast?”
“Do you not remember where you were earlier? We’re the fucking Defiant God Brotherhood. We have resources everywhere.”
I move behind him, noticing Brooks, Grant, and Alessandro are here, as well as a few men I don’t know.
Dimitri says, “Lilith, get Clara out of here so we can take care of Wolfe.”
I don’t need to be told twice.
In the foyer, Miranda is awake, holding her head.
“Are the kids safe?”
“They are.” I hold out my hand, helping her to her feet. “They’re upstairs and help is coming.”
We hurry upstairs. She goes to the nursery while Clara and I go to the twins’ bedroom. Diego throws himself into my arms when he sees me.
“It’s okay. I’m here.”
“I was scared,” he says.
“I know.” I hug him and Clara close. “We’re safe.”
And we are.
