"Why didn’t he bring me?"

He sighed, looking back at his phone. "I told you, he said it was unsafe.."

"Yeah, gathered that part." I pushed my coffee away. Most of it was gone anyway. "If he’s having a meeting, wouldn’t it be safer to be down there than here?"

"Does it matter where you are?"

I wasn’t sure, but I couldn’t think straight.

I woke up to coffee and no Owen. I should have been happy, but I wasn't. The note he left me put me on edge. I'd grown used to him being around, and now I didn't know what to do.

"Just act like he's out for a fly."

"Owen doesn't leave me alone," I said. I didn't tell him about the only time he had. That would only make me think about the fact we slept together, and I didn't want to think about that right now.

Miles set his phone down, knitting his fingers together. "Ashley, he’s in a meeting with Logan. You know that things could go wrong. He just wanted to keep you safe in case Logan planned something.”

I swallowed knowing that. I knew that he was trying to keep me safe but it didn’t mean it didn’t hurt.

He offered me a smile. "He just messaged me and said he was on his way back. Should be here by dinner."

My heart stopped beating. I needed more information. How had the meeting gone? And if it went well, did that mean I could go home?

"He..they finished the meeting?"

Miles nodded his head. "Yeah, they went to have a protective plan placed over you, so you can't be forced to go with Logan."

My eyes widened. "They what?"

A protective plan was only ever put in place for people who needed it. The alpha obviously protected everyone, but only a few were kept on close tabs with him personally. Normally, they were children.

I swallowed, wondering what that all meant. Were we leaving the cabin? Were we going back into town? Or were we stuck out here even longer?

"What else?" I asked. "What else do you know?"

Miles shrugged again. "That's all I have. Owen will tell you more when he gets here."

I scowled. "You must know more."

"I don't. You know what I know."

I suddenly felt nervous and turned to pace the kitchen, running my hands through my hair. I was going to have to wait until Owen got back.

I tried doing some art, but my hands were shaking too badly to make straight lines. I tried to cook but ended up burningeverything. I tried asking Miles for more answers, but he offered me nothing.

It was a little past five when Owen's truck pulled up. I spun around, watching him pull in and turn the vehicle off.

I swallowed, nervous.

Owen got out and headed up towards the house. He opened the door stepping inside. His eyes dropped to me right away, and I held onto the counter. "What happened?" I asked before he could even slip his shoes off.

He looked at Miles, who was grabbing his jacket. "I only told her what you told me," he said.

Owen grunted and then looked back at me. "I had a meeting with Ayden, and he agreed to put you under his protection so we can leave."

I felt my heart stop beating, and I almost didn't believe him.

"So…what does that mean?" I asked.
