“I'm glad you're awake. I was so worried,” Ryan says to me, reaching for our hand and rubbing circles on it with her thumb. I can hear the concern in her voice, but I’m not used to seeing her soft side.

“Hi, Layla. I'm Dr. Brooke. Good news is that nothing is broken. You will be sore for a few days, but other than that I think you will be fine.” She smiles genuinely. I give her an enthusiastic smile in return.

“Great! So, I can go.” I say it as more of a statement than a question because I'm leaving regardless. I've got places to be and bitches to stab. The doctor puts her hands out to stop me from getting up while Ryan squeezes our hand reassuringly.

“Well, no. I'd like to keep you overnight for observation,” she states. Anger is bubbling over. This isnt the time or place, but I can’t stand being told what the fuck to do. It doesn’t matter who it is.

“No, thank you. I'm leaving.” I start to get up, but the doctor stops me again.

“Please, you've been passed out from oxygen loss for a very long time. I just want to be safe,” she says. Shoving Dr. Brooks away from me, I stand up.

“I said…I'm leaving!” I shout as I scoot off the bed.

“Layla, please..” I hear Ryan plead with me, but I'm not listening. The doctor must have hit the call button as two nurses rush in and try to contain me. I'm losing it. They grip our arms, trying to get me to calm down, but it isn't working.

Before I can push them off, I feel a sharp sting to our neck. I finally shove them off and take off running out of the room. I hear Ryan yelling behind us, but I ignore her.

Running out of the emergency exit in nothing but ahospital gown, the cool air hits our ass and our body starts to grow weak. I make it to the driveway, leading out of the hospital parking lot, before the dizziness takes over. Dammit. Our body hits the concrete, pain bites into our skin, and then I’m out.

Chapter 21

Ryan

I run toward the waiting room to find Blaze and Aaron sitting there. I didn't have time to ask what they were doing together, but we will have that conversation later.

“Have you two seen Layla?” I rushed out. They look up from where they're sitting, Blaze stands up.

“No, I thought she was admitted?” Blaze asks.

“She freaked out about staying and took off again. The doctors gave her a shot, but they couldn't keep her contained before the medicine took effect. We have to find her!”

Blaze nods at Aaron to follow as he grabs my hand, taking off outside toward his Jeep.

We whip around the parking lot and as we are about to exit, I spot a body laid on the side of the road. It's hard to make out who it is with no light, but my gut tells me it’s Layla.

“Stop!” I shout and Blaze slams on the brakes. I jump out and rush toward the body, turning them over. It's Layla. Aaron is already running toward us when I move aside so he can pick her up. Blaze parks beside us, and Aaron is placing Layla into the back seat. Needing to be next to her, I tell Aaron to take the front seat.

“So, do we go back to the hospital or what?” Blaze asks.I mull it over in my head and decide to take her back to the house. We can all use the rest and figure out what we’regoing to do.

“Please take us home,” I say, my voice sounding defeated. Blaze glances at me through his rearview mirror before stepping on the gas.

We pull up at the house at a quarter until midnight. Neither of our parents' vehicles are in the driveway. I didn’t expect my step-mother to be here, but from what I know, my dad hasn't been home all day. Since the little incident with Blaze, I haven’t seen him much.Blaze and Aaron help settle Layla in her bedroom. When they both come down the stairs, they let me know she’s still asleep. Blaze wraps his arms around me and kisses me on top of the head.

“Do you need us to stay?” he asks, mumbling into my hair. I pull back from him and give him a half smile.

“No, you should both get some rest. We’ll be fine.” I reassure him. He gives me one last squeeze and pulls away.

“I'll be back in the morning to check on you,” he says softly, and I give him a kiss on the cheek. Aaron steps up to hug me goodnight.

“Text me if you need anything,” he says. The demand in his voice sends shivers down my spine. I give him a kiss on the cheek and walk them to the door. Blaze was halfway into his Jeep when he pops his head over the door.

“I love you, princess!” he says loudly. I smirk at him.

“I love you, Daddy!”

Blaze winks at me and then gets in his Jeep before they drive off. In a daze, I get ready for bed. Standing at the foot of my bed, I contemplate going to Layla. What the hell? I climb under Layla’s covers and cuddle up to her, my face buried in her hair. My arm is wrapped around her body as I pull her in close, her back to my front. Layla shifts in her sleep and mumbles gibberish.

“Layla, it's okay. You're safe. Relax, baby.” I whisper in her ear, trying to soothe her. She flutters her eyes open and a pair of beautiful, green eyes stare back at me. Thatlets me know she's herself as they were much darker in the hospital. Getting frustrated, I tell myself to figure out what is happening.
