“I slept with Sierra last night.”
“Ugh, Jack. Why did you go and do a stupid thing like that?”
“It just happened. But I made it very clear to her that nothing would come of it.”
“You make it clear to all the women you sleep with, and it doesn’t matter. Your lack of not being able to keep your dick in your pants lands you into trouble at some point.”
My phone rang. When I glanced at it, I saw Claire calling again, so I declined the call.
“You don’t have to take that?” Daniel asked.
“No. It’s Claire again. She’s been calling the past couple of days.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. I haven’t answered her calls.”
“It might be important, Jack,” Daniel said.
“If it were, she’d leave a message. I’m sure she’s just trying to get more money from me.”
My office door opened, and Sierra popped her head in.
“Sorry to interrupt. I just wanted to let you know that your trip is booked.”
“Thank you, Sierra.”
“Trip? What trip?” Daniel asked.
“I’m going to Hawaii for a little R&R.”
“When are you leaving?”
“December 24th-January 2nd.”
“You do remember that Chrissy and I will be spending the holidays in Maine, right? We’re leaving Christmas night.”
“I remember. The company will be fine for a week. I’ll still be working while I’m there.”
“God forbid you take some real time off.” He smirked.
“Time off isn’t in my vocabulary. You know that.” I pointed at him.
Chapter Eight
THREE DAYS LATER
Sierra
I’d barely seen Jack the past couple of days. He’d been across town in meetings, and when he did come to the office, he was in more meetings. Becca had given me two tickets to the Broadway play Hadestown for Friday night. She and Brad were supposed to go, but since Brad’s parents weren’t coming for Thanksgiving, they decided to take a long weekend and visit them in Rhode Island. I’d been working up the nerve to ask Jack if he wanted to go with me for the past twenty-four hours.
“Excuse me, Jack?” I stepped into his office and shut the door.
“What is it, Sierra?” He stared at his computer screen.
“A friend of mine gave me two tickets for the play Hadestown for tomorrow night. I was wondering if you’d like to go with me?”
He stared at me momentarily and leaned back in his chair.
