Alexei follows me back towards Giorgio.
“Uncle Giorgio, the Dubrov siblings are headed upstairs to the sunroom. I’ve asked for a private meeting with them all. Please, will you join us?”
He leans close to my ear. “You’ve left me no choice but to agree, haven’t you, girl?” he hisses.
I take a deep breath. There is no point in even replying to that.
I grab Alexei’s hand and start heading towards the sunroom.
My stomach is twisting nervously.
But this has to happen. For my baby.
Chapter 26 - Alexei
Clara grabs my hand and starts walking into the house, leading me towards the sunroom.
Behind me, Oleg grabs my arm. “Alexei. A word,” he growls under his breath.
I pull Clara to a stop. “Clara, I’ll be right behind you. Go ahead, okay?”
She looks worried for a second but then nods, and disappears into the house. My eyes follow her.
Oleg drags me off to the side, away from the crowds, into a passageway that is semi-private.
Leon and Yefim soon join us.
They all look furious.
“What the fuck kind of game are you playing here?” Yefim snarls.
“I don’t know what you mean. What game?”
“You are going to get us all killed and fuck up a delicate alliance. You think everything is a fucking game, don’t you? Our family deserves better from you, Alexei. We expected more from you,” Oleg says.
“Did we, though? He is always fucking reckless and not thinking about the consequences," Leon blurts out.
I stare in shock between my brothers. “Guys, what in the world—"
“No, man, you took it way too far this time. Your little challenges—they are getting out of hand. This one—I can’t believe you did this. Are you really that bored with your life that you have to go this far for entertainment?"
“Stop, what the fuck. This isn’t entertainment,” I snarl angrily, realizing that they think this is some kind of twisted joke. Something I am not taking seriously.
“Of course it is. You got bored. You always pull stupid shit when you get bored."
“You’re wrong Oleg. Clara isn’t just some challenge for me. I have had my eye on her since the alliance started. I have wanted her since then, and in all honesty, I have fallen completely in love with her. I want to spend the rest of my life with her and I will fight to the death to have that. I won’t give up on her—she is my entire world.”
My brothers look stunned.
Leon finally speaks. “You love her?”
“Yeah, man. I love her.” I haven’t said it out loud before. Not even to myself. It feels so good to admit it to someone. I’ve been holding it inside and trying to deny it, thinking she wasn’t interested in me.
But she’s pregnant—I am going to be a father. And I love her.
“Shit. I thought you were just messing around…." Oleg sighs, running his hand through his hair.
I shake my head. “No. I’ve never been more serious about something in my life.”
