The Gray Zone

Sin strolls outof the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist. I roll over to my stomach and prop my head on my hands to better watch his muscles ripple as he pulls on a pair of jeans sans underwear.

He reaches over and slaps my ass. "Quit ogling me and get dressed. I've got to meet with Javier this morning, so you're riding to school with Lucien."

"You're missing class on the second day?"

He takes a shirt out of the chest of drawers and pulls it over his head. "It won't be a problem. It's computer science, and I've already mastered everything on the syllabus. The instructor told me I don't have to show up every day. He's the same one I had last quarter, so he knows I don't need the class. He's looking into a way I can test out of the most basic computer science courses."

I smile at him, a swelling of pride filling up my chest. He hasn't had access to a formal education, and yet he's the smartest person I've ever met. I have no idea how he managed to survive my father, let alone find a way to make something of himself despite how hard Damien tried to break him.

He catches me watching him. I'm making him nervous. I can tell when his hand rakes through his hair twice, his tell. "What?"

"You're remarkable," I say and roll over onto my back. The nervous expression falls as he takes in the tiny camisole and lace panties I wore to bed.

My sleeping attire has been shrinking the longer I sleep next to Sin. There are practical reasons for why my pajamas are little more than scraps of lace.I'm sure he thinks it's for his benefit, but that's just a bonus. The actual reason is because my husband is a furnace, and if I were to wear more I'd likely die from heat stroke the way we sleep tangled together.

My apparel does have a strong effect on him though. He climbs on top of me. The fabric of his jeans rubs against my thighs as he lowers himself down. "Fuck going to school and meeting with my uncle. Suddenly, I can't think of a single reason to leave this room."

His mouth crashes against mine, and the hunger we always have for each other ignites. We kiss for several moments before I manage to find the strength to stop. "I actually do need to go to class. Not everyone is a genius."

He growls. It shouldn't be sexy watching my husband become more animal than man, but it is. It takes him a moment, but he manages to regain control of himself. When he does he smirks at me. "You're going to pay for that later."

I shiver. "You're going to torture me?"

"You started it, and you'll love every moment of it, I promise you."

Getting up from the bed, I slowly strip off what little I'm wearing on my way to the bathroom. "Two can play at that game."

His fists clench by his sides. I can see the battle raging inside him. He wants to reach for me, but I've just laid down a challenge, and Sin always rises to a challenge. I close the door to the bathroom before he can break too soon.

History class is mostly uneventful. The professor starts class right away, which cuts down on the amount of gossiping my fellow classmates are able to do. Jenna gets to class a minute or two late and slips out a few minutes early again. Not only is she going to piss off the professor, but as my partner I'll be guilty by association. It reinforces the negative impression I got from her last night at the library.

My brother stands waiting for me outside class. "Hey, little bird, ready to head to your next class?" I guess Sin still hasn't made it to campus.

I have half a mind to complain about the constant hovering. I mean, there are actual guards here at the school whose job it is to protect us. And yet the men in my life continue to act like a bunch of cave men, hovering around the women to keep us safe.

"Who's protecting Amber if you're here with me?"

The corner of his mouth curves up. "You don't have to worry about Amber. She's got two boyfriends, remember? She's probably better protected than you are."

"Lucky her," I grumble.

Lucien chuckles. "She doesn't complain about it like you do."

"Well, not everyone can be as cheerful as I am," I retort.

"Yeah, you're just a little ray of fucking sunshine."

I bump him with my shoulder. "I'm a Blackthorne, what do you expect?"

"C'mon, brat. Let me deliver you to your husband. I've got my own class to get to."

Lucien and I walk to my science class together and find Sin already inside the lab.
