Vanessa laid a hand on Fernando’s arm. “If this makes you uncomfortable at any time, let me know. You two have been beyond supportive. As long as you’re involved in Violet’s life, I can handle-”

“Shhh. No need to say any more. I don’t have any doubts.” Fernando brightened and danced a sidewalk salsa. “We’ll decorate the nursery for you too, right, Jon?”

Jon playfully shoved his husband. “Are you ever in a bad mood?”

“Not anymore.” Fernando turned toward Vanessa. “We should go inside.” Realizing how emotional it would be to see the interior, he added, “If you’re ready, of course. There’s no rush.”

Vanessa straightened her shoulders. “I’m as ready as I’ll ever be. I don’t think it’ll get any easier.” She kissed her baby’s back and wrinkled her nose. “I think Violet has a number two. We should go inside so I can change her—unless you want to, Jon.”

Jon scrunched his face. “Been there, done that the past few days. You can have the honors.”

Fernando reached for Violet. “Honestly, you two. It’s a normal bodily function. Give her to me.”

Vanessa’s smile spread across her face. “Living with you guys is going to be a hoot.”

Jangling the house key and crossing the lawn, she said, “Let’s go inside. I’m ready.”
