She sighed. “All right. I’ll be the bait if doing so will protect our friends. How do we set this up?”

“Remember, it’s my last option. If we use it, we’ll leave a trail of breadcrumbs for the Butcher. When he walks into our trap, we’ll nab him.” David cupped her cheek. “Before we set the trap, we’ll put every resource we have into locating him before he finds you.”

“How can I help?”

“Are you willing to tell Wolf Pack about the Butcher’s attack on you and your family?”

Emma grimaced. “If it will help.”

“One of them might ask a question that jars your memory.” Jon might be the best option. David hoped Jon’s legendary interrogation skills closed the gaps in Emma’s memory.

“What else can I do?”

He studied her a moment. “We need to compare the case files of the Butcher’s victims to look for commonalities, anomalies, and create profiles.”

She shuddered. “I understand.”

“If you can’t assist with cases and profiles, no one will think less of you. I know how difficult this will be.” If Emma participated in the process, she’d be forced to relive the attack on her and her family as well as discuss the breaches in her security.

“I’m tougher than I look. When do we start?”

“As soon as I talk to Agent Jordan.”

“What if he’s still asleep?”

He smiled. “Then I’ll have the pleasure of waking him. Do you want to listen to the call or tell the others to set up for a meeting?”

“I’d rather be the message bearer. However, Agent Jordan will want proof I’m safe.”

David brushed a kiss over her mouth, then called the FBI agent.

“Yeah, Jordan.”

“It’s David Montgomery.”

“Is my witness safe?” Jordan demanded.

Emma rolled her eyes. “I’m fine, Agent Jordan.”

“No thanks to your flunky,” David added.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Keep Wells on a leash.”

“Wells? What are you talking about?”

“Agent Wells tried to sneak up on my home overnight. He’s lucky he didn’t end up full of holes.”

Jordan muttered a curse. “I’ll talk to him.”

“Did he act on your authority?”

“Are you accusing me of spying on you?”

“Is that what I’m doing?”

“Yeah, you are, and I don’t appreciate it. We’re on the same side.”
