“Are we?”

“Look, we want the same thing.”

“Which is?”

“The Butcher behind bars before he hurts anyone else.”

“How far are you willing to go to make that happen?”

“What are you getting at, Montgomery?”

“Either you or one of your agents left a bug in my kitchen.”

Silence, then, “Do you know who?”

“I have a pretty good idea.”

“Then you know it wasn’t me,” Jordan said flatly. “Wells left it, didn’t he?”

“Ask him.”

“I need to go.”

“Hold it, Jordan.”

“What? Unlike country bumpkin sheriffs, I’m busy.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about the Butcher’s latest communication?”

Another curse from the FBI agent.

David scowled. “Knock it off. You’re still on speaker.”

“Sorry,” he muttered. “Wells must have spilled his guts. What did you do to him?”

“Nothing.”

“He better not have a mark on him or I’ll file charges against you.”

“Tell your agent to stay clear of the Rocking M unless he has a valid reason to be there. Everyone at the ranch is on high alert, and my people are armed.”

“Are you threatening my agent?”

“I’m explaining the facts.”

“Tell me where you are. I need to know in case we have to move her quickly.”

David laughed. “Good try, Jordan.”

“Let’s at least discuss the possibility.”

“If you’re trying to triangulate my position, you’re wasting your time. I’ll be expecting your report on the package contents by noon.”

“The lab is backed up,” the agent protested.

“Noon,” David repeated and ended the call. He stood and held out his hand to Emma. “Come on. It’s time to track our quarry.”
