Cade’s eyes narrowed. “You’re as alpha as the rest of us.”
Sasha moved past Cade and Matt. “Delilah.” She hugged the Wicks owner. “Hope you don’t mind if Cade and I come with you and Matt.”
“Of course not.” Despite her words, she looked uncomfortable.
Matt wrapped his arm around Delilah’s shoulders and eased her to his side. With his other hand, he dug out his key fob and tossed it to his teammate. “Load your gear while Delilah and I lock up.”
After a quick glance at Delilah, Cade said, “Sure.” He held out his hand to Sasha and led her outside.
Matt closed the door, wrapped his other arm around Delilah, and pulled her against his chest. “You okay?”
“Not really.”
“Aside from your mother, what’s wrong?”
She dropped her gaze. “It doesn’t matter. Let’s just go.”
“Hey.” Matt lifted Delilah’s chin and waited until her gaze locked with his. “I want to know what’s bothering you.”
“I haven’t told anyone except you about my weight problem.”
“Cade and Sasha are friends. They’ll be as impressed as I am with your accomplishment. You can trust them.” He pressed a soft kiss to her lips. “They will understand.”
“I’d rather they hear the truth from me.”
“You have time to tell them on the drive to Harmony.” He set the alarm. Outside, they found Liam talking to Cade and Sasha.
“We’ll watch both houses,” Liam said. “Trent mentioned assigning PSI trainees to help.”
“Good training.” Cade tossed Matt his keys.
Matt eyed the sniper. “Let me know if there’s trouble at either place.”
“Copy that.”
Delilah laid her hand on Liam’s arm. “Keep an eye on Piper and the shop. I’m worried the man who attacked me might hurt her.”
“No problem.”
“Time to go.” Matt clapped Liam on the shoulder. “Appreciate the help.”
“Let us know if you need the rest of Bravo, Matt.”
After saluting his teammate, he pressed his hand to Delilah’s lower back and guided her to the shotgun seat while Cade and his wife settled into the back. As he drove from Otter Creek, Matt called Rod Kelter.
“It’s Matt. Delilah’s mother is on her deathbed and asking to see Delilah. I’m driving her to Harmony. If you need to ask more questions, call me.”
“Why shouldn’t I call Delilah?”
“By tomorrow morning, she’ll have a new cell phone number.”
Delilah’s head whipped his direction, her eyes wide.
“I see. One of the Fortress phones?”
“That’s right. I’ll let you know the number when I receive the phone.”
“Good enough. Check in when you return. Hopefully, I’ll have some good news by then.”
