Isweep her up into my arms and march down the hallway and stop at the elevator. A few beings try to get on with us. I snarl and they back up.

We quietly go down together, with her in my arms.

Katie stares at the ring on her hand, not saying a word.

I set her down on her feet when we reach the car and guide her to the back seat. Then I drive home like I’ve done so many times before. But this is the last drive. Tomorrow I will return this vehicle to the hangar so it can be checked, cleaned and fitted for another operation with other personnel. I am officially moving into this domicile with Katie and taking job offers in this area. I plan on still taking on tasks with Spartan Shield that are within the vicinity of my home and do not require much distance from my female or my future offspring.

I park on the curb in front of the house. Then I get out and guide her out of the back seat and sweep her up into my arms again and carry her to the house.

I kick open the front door and settle my female onto her feet. Then I close the door behind us.

She sets down her bag and gives me a serious look. “Are you sure this is what you want? I’m not certain about what you said back there at the courthouse. The more I think about it, the more I’m worried you weren’t being truthful to yourself. Was that just a performance for the media? You don’t have to stay. I can?—”

Katie pouts with disappointment.
