Sawyer spoke up. “You know that movie where the people are getting rescued from an elevator and just as the guy, who was a trouble maker and you knew from the start wasn’t going to make it to the end of the movie, gets halfway out the door?”
Sage put a hand to her mouth. “That happened to you guys?”
He stared at her for a moment. “Yes. We both got cut in half.”
Jade put a hand on his knee. “Sawyer boosted me up to the waiting arms of the firemen.”
“Aww.” She looked at Sawyer. “How’d you get out?”
“I jumped.”
“Out of the elevator?”
“To the edge of the second floor. Then the firemen hauled my ass the rest of the way out. I could’ve done it myself if I hadn’t had six beers and a quarter bottle of tequila.”
Jade shook her head. “Seven beers and a half a bottle of tequila.”
Sage laughed. “No wonder you didn’t want to tell Dad.”
“Anyway. We got out and one of the firemen, the cuter one, wanted my furniture for his little brother. So he came and got it this morning. That’s why we're home a day early.”
“So you get an extra day to rest.”
He sighed. “No. Dad’s putting me right to work tomorrow. Unloading hay.”
“Well, you have kind of slacked off for the last six years.”
“Slacked off. I’ve been working my ass off.”
Jade raised her hands. “Okay, you guys. Why do I always feel like a referee when you two are together?”
Sawyer and Sage glared at each other for a moment, then he grinned. “So, how’s the bakery guy?”
“Still baking. Still raising five kids.”
He pointed at her. “You know who’s single now? Sketch Kelly.”
Sage leaned against the back of the chair. “Be still my heart.”
“Hey. He has money. He sold some weird software he developed.”
Jade leaned forward. “Hold on. Sketch Kelly found a girlfriend?”
“A wife. But, sadly, it didn’t work out. He was probably too much for her in the bedroom.”
Sage put her hands over her ears. “Eww. Stop. I can’t even imagine Sketch having the equipment to… Oh, my gosh. Now I won’t be able to stop thinking about that.”
“He’s available. Maybe he can prove to you he has the equipment to—”
Jade put a hand over his mouth and Sage got to her feet. “Shut up.” She headed for the kitchen. “I got some dessert for us, but I think I’m only going to give some to Jade.”
Jade turned toward Sawyer. “You’re being a brat tonight.”
“Sorry. She just makes it so easy.”
“Leave her alone.”
Sage returned with a bakery box and Sawyer smiled. “So, you have been to the bakery.”
