Sawyer got in one more kiss, then went to unhitch the trailer. When that was done, they drove both vehicles the mile to Sage’s house. She was on the porch when they drove up.
“I called Dad, and he said you were on your way. Twenty minutes ago.”
“I had to unhitch the trailer.” He followed Jade onto the porch.
Sage hugged Jade, then eyed Sawyer for a moment, before taking his arm and pulling him in for a hug.
“Fine. Can you stay awhile?”
“Sure.”
They went inside and Sawyer and Jade sat on the couch, leaving a foot of space between them. Sage took a chair.
“So how was the drive? Any problems?”
Jade glanced at Sawyer. “Not on the drive. We did have a bit of trouble with the elevator.”
“You took the creaky old elevator?”
“Jade forced me to.”
She swung at him and hit him in the arm. “I didn’t force you. Quit blaming it on me.”
Sage leaned forward in her seat. “What happened, guys?”
Jade smiled. “We got stuck.”
“Stuck?”
Sawyer sighed. “Yeah. Stuck. The damn thing stopped between the first and second floor.”
“Oh my God. How long were you in there?”
“We’re not totally sure. Around five hours, we think.”
“Five hours?”
Jade laughed. “Yeah. But we passed the time.”
“How?”
Sawyer patted Jade’s arm. “Let me. We were on our way back from the corner store after buying some beer. While we were there, Denise gave me a bottle of tequila as a going away present.”
“Oh, she’s so sweet.” Sage cocked her head. “So you drank for five hours?”
Sawyer laughed. “Basically, yeah. But when we told Dad, Ember, and Granddad, we left that part out.”
“Of course. Got it.”
“So how’d you get out? And how drunk were you when you did?”
Jade smiled. “Pretty damn drunk. But two very cute firemen rescued us.”
“Oh. Okay! How cute?”
“One was cuter than the other, but both were very nice and sweet.”
“How’d they get you out?”
