Page 49 of Make Me Feel Again

“Don’t you think that’s a bit weird, if they knew me they would have come over and said something.” She shrugs again.

“I wouldn’t worry, Ry. Whoever it was, was just paying for our food and drinks.” Her eyes flicker between mine. “Are you okay? You don’t think it was James, do you?” She frowns, glancing over her shoulder and then around the restaurant. I scan over the guests.

“I don’t think so, surely he wouldn’t be so blatantly open, his face has been plastered all over the news as a person of interest in two homicides.” An uneasy feeling washes over me, like I’m being watched. I scan the restaurant again.

“I best get back to the office, I have a lot to get done today.” I want to get out of here as soon as possible. The walk back to the office, I can’t stop looking over my shoulder, feeling tense. I send a quick text to Cash.

Me:By any chance, were you just at Gachos?

Cash:No, why?

Me:Someone paid for mine and Rachel’s lunch and left before I could see who it was. They told the waiter they knew me. Maybe Boh?

My phone rings.

“Cash.”

“Are you back at the office?”

“I’m just walking back now with Rachel,” I say picking up my pace. I can tell by Cash’s voice he isn’t happy about this person paying for my food, and to be honest, neither am I.

“Can you work from my place for the rest of the day? I will come and get you from the office now.”

“Cash, I can’t just up and leave when something happens. I’ll be fine in the office,” I say, and Rachel stares ahead, smirking.

“Sorry, I worded it wrong before,” he says. “You’re coming here. I will come and get you now.”

“Cash. No.” I pull my phone away from my ear and look at the screen.Ahh, he hung up.

“Everything okay?”

I roll my eyes. “He wants me to work from his house this afternoon. He doesn’t like what happened at the restaurant.”

“I’m sure if you spoke to the police, they would have the CCTV looked at.”

“Yes, that’s a good idea.”

James

Myhandstremblearoundthe glass I hold while I sit at the bar. I can’t believe she left me again. She went on another fucking holiday with Cash. I rub my forehead, taking controlled breaths. I needed to be near her, I feel like I’m losing her as the months go on, but our plans are not ready yet and I can’t risk having her and then losing her again.

Time is running out; you need to remind her who she belongs to.

Her laugh filters through the air relaxing me as I slowly calm down. I glance carefully over my shoulder, I can only see the back of her, but it’s enough. Soon enough I will be the reason she laughs like that; I will be the reason she is happy.

Make her smile, buy her and her friend lunch.

I smile. What a great idea. I finish my drink and stand up, but before walking towards the waiter, I feel the pull towards her so I give her one last glance.Soon, Rylee.

It’sbeenthreeweekssince Cash and I got back from the cabin, and due to Cash’s work, I have only seen him twice since Christmas Day at Bridget’s, and then I stayed that night with him, then when he picked me up from the office the day I had lunch with Rachel.
