“No. Apparently, the witch could also smudge the faces and distort the voices. I could see the figures but make out no defining features. I also heard everything in a muted and distorted tone. I wouldn’t be able to identify them via sound or sight. I was able to see that Harvey had indoor security cameras. If they were on during this, then we can show that Leo was, in fact, not involved in killing Harvey.”
“Okay, I will get access to that. We can verify that Leo didn’t do it. Will that be enough to let him go free?” I hoped so. “Do you think the cameras will show who did it?”
“It will be enough to let him be released into the custody of GSC, but I believe we need to move him to a safe house until we can close this case and verify his safety. As for the footage showing who did it, the spell should also affect the cameras if the witch was wise. We will have to look and see. I hope we are lucky, and she didn’t think that part out.”
“Let’s go.” Dean started for the door. “We have a mate to get released.”
Chapter Seven
Leo
I missed my mate.
Ashton had stopped in a couple of hours ago and asked if I knew the password for Harvey’s security cameras. Since my ex never changed passwords, I could access the interior and exterior footage. Ashton took that information to the captain and said he would return soon. His idea of soon and mine varied widely, it seemed.
“Don’t worry.” Lillianna patted my hand. “He’ll be here soon, and I have a good feeling that you will be released within the next couple of hours. That’s probably why it’s taking a while, he must make arrangements and complete all the paperwork correctly. Try to relax.”
“I’m trying.” I leaned back in the chair and tried to release the tension held in my body. “I just don’t want to be here much longer, and I still can’t access my memories. I feel helpless. I hate that feeling.”
Ding.
“We all do.” Lillianna pulled out her phone and smiled at the message. “They are on the way up here now.”
“Thank the goddess.” I was anxious to get out. And to see Ashton.
Knock. Knock.
“Sorry, I took longer than I thought.” Ashton walked into the room and came directly to my side, kissing my cheek. “But we have some news.”
“There is good news.” Dean sat down next to Lillianna, and the two smiled slightly.
“And there’s bad news.” Willa took the seat on the other side of Dean and rolled her eyes. “Let’s get this all out on the table so we can get out of here.”
“I can go?” I straightened up in my chair, excitement flaring to live inside me. “I’m free.”
“The good news is that we were able to verify you were not the one that ended your ex’s life.” Ashton held my hands and stared at me with a severe face. A bit of my excitement waned.
“So why do you look like someone kicked your puppy?” I bit my lip, anxious to hear what had my mate so straight-faced.
“We weren’t able to identify who did murder Harvey.” Ashton looked at Willa and Dean, who nodded. “There was a spell cast that made all distinguishing features and sounds distorted. We could see that you showed up while the incident was taking place and that Harvey tried to get them to let you go, but instead, they knocked you out and decided to use you as the scapegoat and cover up their tracks.”
“Do we know why Harvey was killed?” I didn’t understand how my ex got himself into such a situation.
“No.” Dean flipped open a notebook and scribbled something down. “But we will be researching his background more thoroughly.”
“So where does that leave me?” If I could, I wanted to leave as soon as possible.
“You are being released into the GSC’s custody. But you can’t go home.” Willa held up a hand when she saw I was about to interrupt her. “We don’t know who did this or what they are capable of if they believe you can identify them.”
“We will be taking you to one of the safe houses we have in the area.” Ashton squeezed my hands clasped in his. “I will be there, and Dean and Willa will stay here to continue working on the case with the police. Other GSC agents will be meeting us at the house and doing safety patrols. We won’t be alone. But you can’t go home.”
“I have none of my things.” I needed my things. I needed to feed my cat.
“One of us can go to your apartment and pack your things,” Dean offered.
“My cat is going to be pissed at me for being gone so long.” I could imagine Rizzo’s attitude when I finally made it home.
“We can bring the cat to you.” Willa smiled. “Or if you want one of us to watch him while you hide, I’m sure Dean wouldn’t mind. He loves cats.”
