“I’ve gone through all the past hookups I had contacts for. No one stood out as still harboring strong feelings for me.”

“Yeah, I was with you for a few of the interviews. I didn’t get any pings from them that they were lying or hiding anything.”

“There were a few hookups I have no clue how to contact, but I doubt it would be someone I saw so briefly, and neither of us bothered to exchange numbers.”

“I think you need to tell Ollie about this note. He needs to know things are not as silent as we believed.”

“I know. I thought the person had given up. It’s been so quiet.”

“We all got a bit too comfortable. I’ve let my guard down lately. We must let everyone know we must raise the wards again.”

“I agree,” I said. “This note is giving me negative vibes.”

Rayne nodded. “It’s too clean of any traces of energy or intent. This person either knows how to do magic weaving or can afford quality freelance mages.”

“I’m worried about how Ollie will react to this. We’re over the drama of my past, but now it looks like it’s returning to haunt me.”

“Ollie is your mate and has your children. He won’t let something like this affect your relationship. Let’s just worry about finding out who sent you this letter.”

Entering the house, I smelled the sweet, spicy scent of pumpkin pie from the kitchen. I loved it when Ollie baked. I knew he enjoyed my desserts, but he also had a talent. “Something smells good,” I growled, grabbing my mate by his hips from behind.

“I craved pie today and decided to bake one.” Ollie turned in my arms and greeted me with the sweetest of kisses. “How was your day?”

“There’s something I need to talk to you about.” I squeezed my mate again before tugging him over to the kitchen chairs.

“Okay. What’s going on?” Ollie held out his hand, and I took it in mine. I needed the grounding his touch brought me.

“I found a letter on my desk at work. I think you were right, and whoever is behind all the attacks is acting on a personal level.” I was frustrated that my past was causing my family all this strife.

“Why do you think that? What did the note say?”

I placed it on the table before us. “Here, read it yourself. Rayne examined it and couldn’t find any traces of magic. I had another team look it over as well. It’s clean; no evidence left for us to work with.”

Ollie read it, his lips turning into a deep frown. “Well, this person is delusional.”

“Clearly. Which means they could be very dangerous.”

“Exactly.” Ollie put the paper down and grasped both my hands in his. “You do know this isn’t your fault, right?”

My clever mate knew me too well. It was hard to mask my feelings from him.

“I’m ashamed it’s my fault everyone has had to deal with this.”

“It’s not your fault, Wolf.” Ollie squeezed my hands and kissed me. “This person is to blame. They are the one causing the chaos. Not you.”

“You’re right. I wish we could catch them. I thought they had stopped, but then this message arrived.”

“I was hoping it was over, too. But now we know that you are the target. It may be easier to zone in on who it could be.”

“Maybe.” I still couldn’t get rid of my guilt.

Ollie rose from the table and adjusted the body sling he held our eggs in. He led me to the stairs leading to our bedroom. “Come on, alpha. Let your omega pleasure you. We can catch the bad guys tomorrow. Tonight is for us.”
