“Wolf.” I jabbed my sleeping mate, trying to wake him.

“Ow.” Wolf rubbed his side. “Why are you being mean to me, mate?”

“Look.” I pointed toward our homey nest at our eggs, lying atop the blankets and pillows.

“What am I looking at?” Wolf rubbed his eyes, trying to clear all the sleepiness from them. “Are the eggs okay?”

“There’s a crack.”

The eggs sported matching mirror-image cracks. Like our babies were trying to reach out to each other, rocking into each other’s eggs.

“Shit. What are we supposed to do?” My mate’s panic came through our mating link. I placed my hand on his shoulder and sent a wave of calming energy through his body.

“Well, first, calm down, baby. This is a natural part of their birthing process.”

“I just want them safe.”

“I know. And they are.” I took my mate by the hand and led him to the nest. “Let’s watch our babies find their way into the world.”

We lay next to the eggs in the nest. Wolf spooned me from behind and nuzzled my neck.

“I can’t believe this is happening,” I whispered.

“I know. I was jealous when Rayne and Zander wouldn’t let me watch their hatching. But now I understand why they wanted to be alone.”

We let the silence grow between us as the eggs rocked. Tiny cracks appeared on the eggs. Joy bubbled in at the thought that I would finally meet my babies.

“I’ve been dreaming about them,” I admitted to my mate.

“You have?”

“I’ve been having dreams about them. I didn’t want to say anything because I wasn’t sure if it was just my imagination or if maybe they were trying to communicate with me.”

“They might have been. I had one the other night, too. I wrote it off as a dream, but maybe it was more than that.”

“Let’s see if they match. Plus, it’ll be a way to pass the time.”

“They do seem pretty quiet right now.” Wolf reached out and softly touched the teal egg then the raspberry one.

“Yeah. Maybe they got tired after all that cracking and need a nap before trying again.”

“Okay, I’ll go first. In my dream, we were lying in the field like the one by the coven lands. You were in the sky, and I was in the grass with the babies. They were both in their wolf forms.”

“They were wolves?”

“Well,” Wolf said, “they were, and then, when they looked at you in the sky, they shifted into dragons.”

“Wait, so they shifted into another form?”

“Yeah.”

“Wow. Didn’t you say your nephew has that ability, too?”

“All three of Rayne’s children do.”

“Are there any other children born in this generation with more than one form?”

Wolf shook his head. “So far, it’s only our family, only our children. We should reach out to other covens, packs, and clans soon. I wonder if anyone else is experiencing similar things with their newer generation.”
