“What?” Wolf shouted. “I did no such thing.”
“Well, somebody did,” I shouted back. “Wolf, he had keys to our damn house. He said you met him at Pink Coffee Cafe last night and—”
“I was with Xavier last night,” Wolf broke in.
“Yeah, that’s what you said,” I answered.
“Babe—”
“Stop.”
Wolf would have to wait to speak. I wasn’t done.
I touched my stomach, reminding myself to calm down. “I have gotten over the whole playboy history thing and want to trust you. But at first, the bitch got me worried. I wanted to beat your ass and contemplated calling Alec to help me hide the body.”
“Babe—”
“But my dragon told me to calm down and think hard.” I walked over to where Wolf was standing.
“And?” Wolf placed a hand on my cheek, gazing at me like everything he had was hanging on my following words. There was not one flicker of guilt shining out of him.
“I’m sorry for doubting you and should have known that the omega was lying or that someone had set this up. Instead, I put a truth ward up. Once you crossed the bedroom threshold, you would have no choice but to be completely honest with me.”
“Ollie.” Wolf dropped to his knees. “Honey, I understand.”
“No—” This sweet man was too understanding. He should be mad. Instead, he stopped me from apologizing.
Wolf took both of my hands in his. “Fuck, babe, in your position I’d have doubted me.”
“I still feel like shit. I should have trusted my mate.”
Wolf kissed my folded hands. “Let’s address the big issue here.”
“Burning the house down to get rid of that scent?”
“I’m tempted to. Why is it so strong?”
“I was wondering the same thing. Maybe they added a magical amplifier to it to distract me from any flaws in the story?”
“Could be. We will have to look into that further. The main question is, who is pretending to be me and giving my house key to an omega?”
“And who was the omega? Is someone pretending to be you? Dress like you, maybe use glamour to fool everyone into thinking they are you? Or was the omega playing a role they were paid to play?”
“Exactly.”
“I should have made the omega stick around or asked more questions. I just was in shock and didn’t think that far ahead.”
“We will find him together and find out who is messing with my life. Because now that they threatened what I love most, they will meet the real Wolf Romano.”
Chapter Thirteen
Wolf
The research was going nowhere. Ollie, Rayne, and I had combed through the evidence and had interrogated members of all the different clans, covens, and packs. Nobody had an issue with us. Who had set up the attacks? Even finding the mystery omega who showed up in our house proved fruitless, as the omega had been under a spell according to the most potent spellcasters in our coven. The videos from the café where the omega met fake me all went offline around the time when they would have been in contact. Another dead end. Were the attacks and the Wolf impersonator connected? Or were these two separate issues we now needed to straighten out? Goddess helped me, I wanted more answers instead of new questions arising.
Luckily there hadn’t been any more attacks or random omegas showing up with stories of a Wolf doppelganger.
“Did you check with all of the other covens again?” I rolled my shoulders as I placed another worthless file down. Rayne and I had been sitting at this conference table for four hours, and my body was protesting.
