He gave me a nonchalant shrug. “He’s giving you too much attention and staring at your ass every five seconds.”
I rolled my eyes and pushed him lightly in the chest. “Oh no, sir. You do not get to be all possessive when you’ve had a shit attitude all morning. And it doesn’t matter anyway. They can look as long as they don’t touch or say anything to me.”
“Did one of them say something to you? Or touch you?” he growled.
I rolled my eyes at his possessiveness. “No, Luke. That’s what I’m saying: if they want to stare at my ass, I don’t care.”
He didn’t seem satisfied, so I continued. “You’re the only one I’m letting between my legs, so you have no reason to go all caveman on me.”
That statement got me another sly smirk and darkness in his eyes. Both of those, along with the possessiveness, seriously had me turned on, although I wouldn’t tell him that.
“You’re mine,” he said, wrapping an arm around my waist and pulling me flush against him. A thrill lit through me, and I think I moaned.
“If it makes you feel better to say that, then fine,” I said in what was supposed to be a mocking tone, but with the arousal pulsing between my legs, it didn’t come out that way at all.
His hands traveled down my back until he gripped my ass, squeezing tightly. “Did you have to wear your tightest pair of leggings, though? No wonder they’re fucking staring.”
“You’re staring, too. Don’t lie.” I gasped when his tongue dragged a line up to my ear and his palms squeezed even tighter.
“I am,” he murmured against my neck.
“Hey, Hazel? You in here?” A voice inside my bedroom called out. I noted the playfulness in Luke’s eyes just before he tightened his grip around me with one hand while the other swung open the door. Sure enough, Hunter was walking past the closet and out of the bedroom when he turned at the door opening beside him.
Understanding and maybe a hint of jealousy crossed his face as he took in the sight before him: me breathing hard, standing flush against Luke with a healthy blush on my cheeks as his hand still palmed my ass.
I inwardly groaned but knew it would be foolish to try to pull away from Luke; he’d keep me hostage against his side until Hunter got the message.Mine.
“Umm… We…” Hunter stuttered, and I felt bad. He was a good kid, and I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. “We’re done out here. The boss just needs you to sign some papers.”
On that note, Luke did loosen his grip, and I was able to step out of the closet. “That was fast,” I remarked as I followed Hunter into the kitchen and threw a scowl over my shoulder at Luke, who wore a shit-eating grin.
THIRTY-FOUR
Hazel
As I signedthe paperwork confirming all my belongings made it into the apartment and nothing was damaged, Luke stood behind me, his hand rubbing the back of my neck and then down my spine. The heat of his body pressed into me.
By the time the men left, my entire body was alive. But I remembered that he had things to tell me and talked myself down from jumping him.
Luke shut the door and turned to stare at me with a shake of his head. “That was interesting.”
“Interesting?” I asked, grabbing my phone off the counter and pulling up the food delivery app. My stomach was growling, and after being stressed and busy, it was the first time food had crossed my mind.
“Apparently Hunter didn’t get the message. Although I feel like I made myself pretty clear.” He leaned back onto the counter, crossing his arms over his chest. He’d long since chucked off his jacket and how he stood showed off the muscles in his forearms and the detailed ink there.
“What are you talking about? He didn’t try anything else.” I pause scrolling through my app for a moment to mimic his posture. Crossing my arms over my chest, I, too, leaned my back against the counter directly across from him.
The kitchen was upgraded with white quartz counters I was sure to ruin sooner rather than later, along with stainless steel appliances and wood cabinets. But it was still a tight alley layout and even on “opposite” sides of the kitchen, we were fairly close together.
Luke smirked when I raised an eyebrow as an invitation to elaborate and answer my question.
“Look at the fridge. Right there on the side.” He pointed behind me, and I slowly swung my head to the left. On the side of the fridge was the magnet with the management numbers the office had given me and the paper with the move-in checklist I had to complete. Then, farther to the back was another, smaller piece of paper. I squinted, leaning over the counter to see what it said.
My eyes widened in surprise, and I ripped it off the fridge, flinging the magnet holding it across the kitchen.
Luke chuckled and peered over my shoulder at a scrap of paper. Scrawled in messy handwriting was Hunter’s name and his phone number.
“When the hell did he leave this?” I was actually surprised. I also thought Luke had made it more than obvious that I had my hands full, at least with him.
