“We can go too, you know,” Rae says to him. “We can go to the show with Margot and get our own hotel after.”
Matt thinks about it long and hard before shaking his head. “Nah.”
Rae lazily points her fork at him. “You just said you wanted to go.”
“Yeah, but Jackson loves her way more than me. I probably won’t even see the guy.”
My heart gets stuck in my throat, and in a split second I’ve dissected all the possible meanings behind that sentence.
Matt is just assuming Jackson has said he loves me by now.
Jackson told Matt he loves me.
It means absolutely nothing.
My prize is probably waiting behind door number three, but that doesn’t stop me from fixating on door number two.
Rae takes no notice of her boyfriend’s words halting my world. She just stares at him and says, “I would be there, too.”
He nods, not looking any more excited about it.
My phone buzzes on the table next to me, and I flip it over.
Jackson:
What the hell is this playlist?
Another message comes in right after it.
Jackson:
You put Landslide on here more than once.
In case you didn’t know.
Laughter bubbles in my chest, and I have to fight a grin as I text him back.
Margot:
Miss me?
I set my phone down and take another bite of food. Matt and Rae are still contemplating their hypothetical trip to New York, but Braden’s eyes are locked on me.
I stop chewing.
He blinks and clears his throat. “Uh, how’s the pasta?”
